Job Description

Consumer and Industrial Team (“ICED-T” or the “Team”): This investment team is one of seven within the Manulife/John Hancock General Account Investment Division’s Global Corporate Finance Group. ICED-T is one of the larger teams and is charged with helping to implement Manulife’s modified buy and hold investment strategy. It has global responsibility for a range of sectors including industrials, technology, aerospace and defense, transportation, healthcare, consumer products, paper and forest products, building materials, retail, media, sports, telecom and business services among others. The coverage universe is largely global and supports General Account investing across MFC’s three primary geographies, Canada, the US and Asia. Investments are primarily investment grade fixed income securities sourced directly and through agents for private transactions, and brokers/dealers for public and public-like transactions. The portfolio is approximately C$40 billion with annual investment volume of roughly C$5 billion. ICED-T consists of fifteen investment professionals based in four offices in North America, with most team members dedicated to specific sectors.

Need: Due to portfolio growth and expectations for continued growth, the Team is engaged in a search for a Director level person that will be based in Toronto. This person will be responsible for the global coverage of partial or complete sectors, consistent with their experience, skill set and other related considerations, and serve as an ICED-T point of contact for Canadian sourced private transactions.

Accountability: The successful candidate will report to the Team Leader, and function as a seasoned fixed-income investment professional with a level of autonomy consistent with the requirements of the job and their background. This individual must possess a well-developed analytical template and demonstrate sector and capital markets expertise, while working closely with other relevant functional areas including Credit and Risk Management, Portfolio Management, Investment Law, Securities Operations, and Tax, and across investment teams and geographies. While the position requires strong analytical skills, relationship management, marketing and collaboration are also necessary skills.

Responsibilities: Using an in-depth fundamental approach, the Director is responsible for identifying, analyzing and preparing investment recommendations for public and private fixed income opportunities generally sourced from the world’s developed debt capital markets. The recommendations will be centered on independently developed credit ratings and address exposure and tenor limits, and consider relative value and portfolio needs. In addition to recommending new investments, the Director will also be responsible for the ongoing and periodic review of existing investments, which may at times result in advocating for a change in credit rating or capacity limit, or reducing exposure. As part of these oversight responsibilities, and with an eye toward business development, the Director will build and maintain relationships with the management of portfolio companies, and other parties relevant to a successful investment platform as required. Doing so will require travel to portfolio company offices, conferences and roadshows. As the Team’s senior most person based in Canada, the successful candidate will also serve as the primary contact person for other team members as it relates to cross border transactions, and private transactions sourced in Canada. A more detailed description of the Director’s responsibilities are as follows:

New Investment Opportunities:

Develop investment strategies and parameters and specify targeted companies across Canada and other geographies, with the financing needs commensurate with Manulife/John Hancock’s diversity, credit quality and duration needs;

Market Manulife/John Hancock’s capabilities to borrowers and relevant third parties;

Build a network of deal sources with an emphasis on Canadian relationships;

Negotiate transaction terms with borrowers and suppliers;

Provide a high level of service to portfolio managers in Canada, the US and Asia, and corporate finance colleagues in Toronto, London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Boston.

Investment Administration:

Assume responsibility for an existing portfolio consistent with experience and team needs;

Monitor portfolio developments impacting credit risk and communicate them in a timely manner to relevant constituents including the team leader, credit and risk management, portfolio management and trading;

Produce written investment analyses for individual portfolio holdings no less than annually, that summarize and update performance metrics and investment risks;

Assess corporate actions including tenders or other changes to the terms or conditions of investment;

Manage transaction amendments and restructurings in collaboration with credit and risk management, portfolio management, legal counsel and other investors.

Required Skills and Experience: Individuals with the following skills and experience would likely be considered qualified candidates for the Director role:

No less than six to eight years of relevant experience working as an analyst for a commercial bank, investment bank, pension fund or money manager;

A well-developed analytical template for fixed income investing based on recovery expectations, that includes a refined understanding of the financial markets and the debt capital markets specifically;

Experience in structuring transactions consistent with market norms;

Relationship management or client service experience or a strong potential to assume a role as an independent relationship manager over time;

Excellent written and verbal presentation skills;

An MBA or the equivalent and/or the CFA designation or a corresponding level of professional training and experience.
