The Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE) invites applications for the A&W Fellowship in One Health. Through the activities of the LFCE, this fellowship seeks to improve food production systems by contributing to the body of research related to One Health and/or complementary research areas that contribute to the goals of One Health. One Health, as it relates to this fellowship, is expected to encompass integrated and collaborative research with consideration for the relationships between soil health, plant health, animal health and human health in food production systems. Relevant research areas may include but is not limited to One Health, regenerative agriculture, sustainable food production systems, rangeland management, grassland ecology and soil health. Research is expected to incorporate industry and consumer relevance, awareness and considerations.
The LFCE ( ) is a historic partnership between academia, industry and government that brings together every piece of the livestock value chain – animals, forage, range management, environmental monitoring, policy, economics, animal health, food quality and safety, sustainability, and public outreach and education. Occupying over 9000 acres of the northern great plains near Saskatoon, the Centre houses approximately 1500 cattle in intensive housing (including feedlot), a 400 head breeding cow herd, approximately 100 breeding bison, and capacity for native species such as elk and deer. Land resources are used for forage development and research, grazing, native prairie management, environmental monitoring and water/soil/air assessment. Laboratory capacity includes sample preparation areas and two laboratories. The facility also includes a 24 stall metabolism barn. This living lab allows researchers to precisely measure several factors on an individual animal, including body weight as well as feed and water intake. By bringing together all aspects of beef cattle research under one roof, combined with the strong network of partnerships, the LFCE has a unique capacity to improve livestock production across Canada and around the globe.
Criteria
The Fellow must be an established faculty member or professional researcher who has a full-time position with another academic institution or governmental agency to which they will be returning. The Fellow could be on sabbatical leave or leave of absence. The Fellow should be based at the University of Saskatchewan’s LFCE, conducting collaborative research at the LFCE for a minimum period of six months and a maximum of two years. Involvement in industry and science outreach, and interaction with students and trainees is encouraged during the Fellowship.
The Fellowship will primarily support salary supplementation, travel, and research costs for the visiting fellow. There is the possibility for the visiting fellow to receive additional support to have one graduate student or post-doctoral fellow from their home institution accompany them for a portion or the entirety of their appointment.
