Reporting to the Senior Transportation Manager, Specialty Logistics, the Transportation Manager, Specialty Logistics will be responsible for managing and analyzing the effectiveness of Transportation processes and vendors as it relates to the Healthcare Logistics chain. This role is responsible for the relationships with local, regional, national and international carrier companies, ensuring carrier performance & AmerisourceBergen objectives are aligned. The Transportation Manager, Specialty Logistics recommends and contributes to improved strategies to reduce cost and improve service levels as a result of these efforts. The Transportation Manager, Specialty Logistics supports the Specialty business including Specialty Wholesale, Third Partly Logistics and Specialty Pharmacy divisions.

  • Responsible for daily inbound and outbound transportation for Specialty and 3PL operations; work with warehouse managers to setup transportation and shipping solutions and resolve any issues
  • Assist Senior Transportation Manager, Specialty Logistics on rate negotiations, carrier selection
  • Work with Senior Transportation Manager, Specialty Logistics on freight bill auditing and carrier selection
  • Recommend transportation strategies to improve service to our customers, distribution centers and business partners
  • Evaluate and compare existing transportation-related expenses; analyze results and develop specific recommendations for cost reduction and improvement for review by management
  • Design specifications for new route structures and optimize existing structures in order to maintain a competitive position in the industry, while meeting customer needs
  • Responsible for associate relations including performance management, development and training
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with the 3PL and Specialty wholesale Customer Service Representatives and supervisory staff
  • Coaches and mentors direct reports
  • Responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of employee engagement initiatives
  • Monitors the overall performance of staff members to ensure compliance with policies and practices
  • Evaluate business processes and designs, develop & implement improvements that reduce cost, improve effectiveness & improves the quality/magnitude of the end result
  • Assist in developing new solutions to various challenges our company faces as it relates to the distribution of product to external & internal customers, managing carrier relations & meeting business objectives
  • Train others in the solutions designed to manage the processes necessary to support the distribution operations
  • Responsible for developing, generating and analyzing Transportation performance metrics
  • Work with carriers as needed to improve various aspects of performance
  • Gather data & requirements for carrier RFPs & carrier conversions
  • Ensure proper transportation of healthcare products under GMP guidelines (security, temperature control, etc.)
  • Assist with Client freight invoicing as required
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Requires training and experience in fields such as transportation, business administration, logistics, or similar vocations generally obtained through completion of a three year diploma program or four year bachelor’s degree program, or equivalent combination of experience and education. Normally requires a minimum of five (5) years directly related and progressively responsible experience in the transportation industry. Pharmaceutical experience would be an asset.

  • Exposure to courier industry experience specific to the Healthcare environment is an asset
  • Exposure to small package, LTL, & TL experience a plus
  • Experience in the preparation of, or responding to RFPs & RFQs in a transportation environment
  • Experience in the management of international Ocean, Air and Ground freight solutions is required
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects
  • Proficiency with project management tools a plus
  • Ability to work effectively within a group environment and also independently with minimal direct supervision
  • Ability to read, analyze & interpret technical journals, financial reports, & legal documents
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing at all levels of the organization and technical abilities
  • Ability to effectively present information to all organizational levels & external groups related to the industry
  • Strong interpersonal, mathematical & organizational skills, with an attention to detail
  • Good analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills to evaluate business problems and apply knowledge to identify appropriate solutions
  • Excellent negotiating skills
  • Ability to implement processes resulting in satisfactory audit practices
