Position: Technical Specialist, Agriculture & Food Security
Reports to: Program Development Manager
Position Term: Full Time term (5 Years)
Primary Location: Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
Workplace Type: Remote across Canada with travel engagement overseas
The Technical Specialist, Agriculture and Food Security will provide technical leadership for World Vision Canada’s (WVC) work in Agriculture and Food Security. The position will focus on expanding World Vision Canada’s programming in Agriculture and Food Security and will play a critical role in developing, growing and supporting World Vision Canada’s capacity and expertise in the sector, through strategically developing, directing and managing programs, developing donor relations and securing donor funding and advocating for appropriate policy with a focus on results-based management. The position represents World Vision Canada internally and externally, working collaboratively with the other Programs & Policy technical specialists as well as other World Vision Canada departments and the larger World Vision partnership.
The Agriculture and Food Security Technical Specialist will be part of Programs and Policy team and will be housed and reporting into one of the Program and Policy departments and will have a matrix reporting relationship to the Sectoral Integration and Technical Branding Manager. The Agriculture and Food Security Specialist will work collaboratively with other Technical Specialists, and program staff within the Development Programs Department (DP), Fragile and Humanitarian Department (F & H); Advocacy and Policy Department and other colleagues at WVC. The Agriculture and Food Security Technical Specialist will also interface with staff from the field teams.
The position is a remote position based anywhere in Canada with significant overseas travel.
The primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:
- Expand the scope and diversity of WVC’s resource base in Agriculture and Food Security through technical support for resource acquisition and donor engagement, as well as providing technical and management oversight as appropriate.
- Investigate and pursue opportunities to increase the extent and quality of WVC’s Agriculture and Food Security programming, in collaboration with field partners and WVC colleagues.
- Draft concept papers and proposals in participatory process with field partners for presentation to donors.
- Review Agriculture and Food Security related resource acquisition opportunities, including support to donor pre-positioning, grant proposal writing and review, and grant start up and implementation.
- Strengthen the capacity of all stakeholders, both in WVC and the field, in Agriculture and Food Security through training, coaching and mentoring to support quality programing leading to measurable impact.
- Contribute to development of WV National, Regional and global Agriculture and Food Security strategies. Develop institutional Agriculture and Food Security capacity building strategy driven by donor and field needs in collaboration with the other departments and support the execution of these plans.
- Maintain current knowledge of research findings, standards and guidelines for Agriculture and Food Security programming through accessing relevant state-of-the-art approaches, innovations and good practice benchmarks and sharing these with WVC and its partners.
- Coordinate evaluation of Agriculture and Food Security programming at various levels and coordinate operational research and learning in the sector.
- Ensure WVC funded programs and policy influence initiatives are aligned with WVI global Agriculture and Food Security technical standards as well as global best practices contributing to improved child wellbeing. Provide technical support to Agriculture and Food Security.
- Provide technical support through Program Support Team to the assessment, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Agriculture and Food Security Technical Approaches and Programs.
- Liaise with marketing department and program donors, providing program updates and advocating for field partners as appropriate.
- Enhance the credibility of WVC’s sectoral expertise through the establishment of strategic partnerships and alliances for external representation of WVC’s programming.
- Represent WV’s work in Agriculture and Food Security to external agencies through correspondence, dissemination of assessment findings and lessons learned, and participation in professional conferences and networks.
- Contributing to thought leadership in the sector through publications, policy discourse and influence.
- Liaise with other WV entities working in Agriculture and Food Security.
Knowledge and skills
- The successful candidate should possess a Master’s degree in Agriculture, Food Security, Agriculture Economics or Agri-business, Natural Resource Management, Resource economics or other related discipline with over five years of relevant experience in a developing country environment.
- A minimum of five years’ experience developing, leading and managing complex, large-scale Agriculture and Food Security initiatives.
- Experience in integrated Food and Nutrition Security programming, Market based Agriculture production systems, as well as pro-poor Agriculture Value chain development approaches in the international development context both in emergency as well as development contexts is key to this position.
- Experience in policy influence and Agriculture and Food Security policy development.
- Demonstrated ability to mobilize stakeholders into partnerships and alliances, lead and facilitate collaborative processes.
- To be successful, candidates will have excellent facilitation skills, strong interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written, strong negotiation, diplomacy, strong leadership and team work skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in both English and French are highly desirable for this position.
- Also required are analytical skills for synthesis of materials, evaluations, and preparation of presentations/articles for publication as well as experience in a PC environment and the MS Office suite software.
- Data base management or familiarity with statistical software is an asset.
- Evidence of a highly motivated team player is necessary.
