Job Description
The Education and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the delivery of approved SEAWA messages to its members, SEAWA watershed communities and stakeholders, and the general public. SEAWA messages are regularly sent out to provide information and to encourage collaborative participation by stakeholders and communities towards fulfilling SEAWA’s Vision and Mission, and achieving its goals. The position requires the implementation of communications activities as guided by the SEAWA Communication Strategy, the advice of the Communications Committee, the overall direction of the Executive Director, and following a teamwork approach and consensus-based decision-making. The nature of this position often requires personal interaction and discussion with other SEAWA staff, committee members, SEAWA partners, stakeholders, and office service providers, which precludes doing work remotely.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement and update as needed, SEAWA communication, education and outreach (C/E/O) activities found in the SEAWA Communication Strategy 2017-2020, and specified in the Work Plan for the calendar year 2017;
  • Prepare, implement, and summarize all documentation and tracking requirements of all C/E/O activities;
  • Update as needed, the performance evaluation plan for the C/E/O activities for the period 2017-2018;
  • Prepare the performance evaluation of all C/E/O activities for the period April 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017;
  • Enhance SEAWA membership, readership, and viewers;
  • Work with SEAWA partners on collaborative C/E/O activities;
  • Prepare scripts, outlines, or brief lesson plans for outreach activities to different grades in schools;
  • Work with the summer student to deliver summer outreach activities and to provide learning experience for the student;
  • You are the support staff to the Communications Committee;
  • Assist in SEAWA office tasks;
  • Find grant opportunities for C/E/O activities, collaborate with partners, and apply; and
  • Perform any other tasks, as they arise, identified by the Executive Director and the Communications Committee.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, physical geography, water resources, education (major in science/biology) or a related natural resource management field;
  • Three years of relevant work or equivalent educational experience in communicating science, using common language, to adults and children;
  • Experience in organizing and holding forums, and other community events;
  • Excellent communication skills (spoken, written, social media, practical demonstration) to educate watershed stakeholders and the general public about SEAWA, WPACs, and environmental sustainability;
  • Working knowledge of, and interest in natural or eco-regions of Alberta, especially the Grasslands – climate, hydrology, geomorphology, soils, biodiversity, and land and water uses;
  • Working knowledge of, and interest in water and watershed issues, and environmental stewardship practices and initiatives in both urban and rural/agricultural areas;
  • Effective social skills to initiate conversations, and work towards collaborative initiatives or partnerships with watershed stakeholders;
  • An appreciation of participatory processes and partnerships such as the WPAC program; and
  • Ability to work within, and experience working with a team.

Position Details

  • A full-time position, initially for six months. This hiring is dependent on SEAWA receiving the anticipated grant for this position. There is a possibility of extension depending upon satisfactory performance and future availability of grant;
  • Annual Salary: $59,000 to $61,000 depending on qualification and experience; with cost-share benefits
  • Majority of the time will be spent working in the SEAWA office;
  • This position reports to the Executive Director;
  • A Police Check and a valid AB driver’s license are required and
  • Legally allowed to work in Canada.
