Job description: The Senior Project Manager, Construction is responsible for the project management of a variety of ongoing and new construction initiatives, from pre-construction and project set-up to closeout and successful end-user delivery. The scope of projects will include office, lab, and manufacturing renovations, and large site developments.

Change management, stakeholder management, strategy, decision-making management, and risk management are key tenets of this role. The Senior Project Manager, Construction will plan, organize, integrate, and deliver projects that are significant in scope and be a key contributor to the project’s schedule, budget and on-site operational activities. They will also be responsible for delivering the projects on time and on budget.

They are also expected to support the development and application of the program governance and project management methodology. They will be instrumental in building and maintaining effective relationships with all those involved with their assigned projects. This role has high visibility within the organization as its contribution and added-value will have a positive and far-reaching effect on the business as a whole.

Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Responsible for facilitating and leading the planning, execution, monitoring, controlling and closure of complex ongoing and new construction projects of varying scale to successful completion on-time and on-budget.
  • Perform strategic analysis of the assigned projects in leading cross-functional risk management of the projects (risk identification, assessment, mitigation, monitoring and closure).
  • Project strategy definition and tactical execution, seeking and achieving alignment with the overarching corporate program and organizational needs.
  • Effectively manage project scope, parameters as well as limitations related to specific project goals, deliverables, tasks, requirements, time-driven deadlines and ultimately costs.
  • Develop and manage the assigned project budgets.
  • Develop schedules and project specific KPIs for measurement and control.
  • Prepare, analyze and report on project progress and results against established KPIs.
  • Ensure clear delineation of project roles and responsibilities to provide clarity to the project team of their individual and collective tasks and schedules.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and motivation to cross-departmental/matrixed project teams in promoting best practices and ensuring a consistent application of project methodology.
  • Actively contribute to furthering the overarching program strategy, governance and communications.
  • May be required to complete and maintain necessary training to work with both regulated and non regulated products.

Stakeholder Relationship Management

  • Extensive internal and external stakeholder relationship management for the assigned projects, serving as a liaison between department representatives to encourage cross-functional and cross-departmental collaboration and information sharing.
  • Collaborate closely with project sponsors and senior management to determine project scope, priorities, and resources.
  • Prepare and oversee the preparation and dissemination of project communications to internal and external stakeholders as needed.

Change Management

  • Promote and guide change management initiatives that include enhancing the internal capability to successfully implement change during the project lifecycle from identifying the need for change, leading the change through to managing the change.
  • Apply a systematic approach for guiding individuals impacted by a change initiative(s) through means of building support, addressing resistance and developing the required knowledge and ability to implement the change(s).
  • Work with and influence project sponsors and senior leaders to build strong and active coalitions.
  • Proactively build a case or proposal of why the change(s) is needed throughout the organization even before the specific details of the solution are mapped out.

People Leadership

  • May be required to lead, manage and support a team to maximize productivity and performance, including availability of expertise within the team for all planned activities, tasks and projects.
  • May be required to lead people development initiatives to increase individual and team bench strength.
  • Evaluate direct and indirect reports through regular one-on-one and team meetings.
  • Ensure all performance reviews are conducted and documented (quarterly goals and annual reviews), providing ongoing quality developmental feedback; facilitate promotion and compensation recommendations in accordance with company policies and practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Project Management certification is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of successful construction management experience, with deep knowledge of all facets of the construction process.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience successfully managing complex projects and stakeholder relationships within multi-stakeholder environments; construction and technology industry experience is an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience of applying the core project management knowledge areas of Change Management, Communication Management and Stakeholders Management.
  • Experience with construction project management of varying scale and complexity from pre-construction, project set-up and closeout.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction management processes, means and methods.
  • A background in heavy civil, commercial and industrial projects with a deep understanding of complex construction projects, and experience as both a Project Superintendent and Project Manager is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory, cleanroom and GMP Facility Design is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in negotiating, coordinating and directing work of subcontractors, and in developing strong working relationships with general contractor personnel, subcontractors, inspectors, and other related parties.
  • Ability to anticipate, plan and see the “big picture” in project scope, scheduling and resource planning.
  • Ability to think critically, effectively deal with change management, resolve conflicts and execute on crisis management.
  • Business and financial acumen; willingness to have an impact on the business beyond the disciplines of project management.
  • Analytical, structured, disciplined and organized; with demonstrated process improvement skill and ability to maintain project management methodology.
  • Attention to detail combined with the ability to execute at a high level with significant independence.
  • Highly flexible, good tolerance for ambiguity and able to quickly adapt to changing priorities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written, oral, presentation); communicates in a clear, concise and organized manner; listens to others to obtain information.
  • Proven experience building strong relationships with project sponsors, senior management, external providers, business partners and stakeholders, etc.
  • Experience in a management role is an asset with the ability to, and aptitude for, mentoring and coaching project team members.
  • Ability to work on a construction site; to climb permanent and temporary stairs, to climb ladders, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
