This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Health Protection, the Public Health Nurse is a member of a multidisciplinary public health team and responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of public health programs. The Public Health Nurse, in partnership with groups and organizations, participates in activities that promote well-being, protect and maintain health, and prevent diseases. This position, assigned to Health Protection, specifically the Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Program, is responsible for activities as they relate to the prevention, control and follow-up of communicable diseases.
Qualifications
- Bachelor in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Certificate in Public Health Nursing an asset
- Eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN)
- 1 year minimum nursing experience in Public Health or Community Health required
- 2 years’ experience preferred
- Nova Scotia Public Health Immunization Certification preferred
- CPR Certification
- Knowledge of public health acts and regulations
- Ability to function independently and within established parameters
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- Experience working as a member of an interdisciplinary collaborative team
- Critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem solving skills and strong decision making abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of: the health status of populations; inequities in health; the social and ecological determinants of health and illness; social justice; principles of primary health care; and strategies for health promotion (including mental health), chronic disease and injury prevention, health protection, healthy development, communicable and non-communicable disease, health emergency preparedness and disaster response as well as the factors that influence the delivery and use of health services.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging public health and nursing sciences to practice and synthesize knowledge from a broad range of theories, models and frameworks.
- Ability to articulate the intersection between economic, social, political, cultural and environmental/ecosystem factors, and the health of populations.
- A valid drivers’ license and access to reliable transportation
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours of Work
Permanent, Part-time (50%) position; 35 hours bi-weekly
Salary Information
$38.6806 – $45.9083 hourly
$47.5150 with 25 years’ RN experience
