The Property Services department is part of the House of Friendship administrative team; providing support to all the programs of House of Friendship. The Building Maintenance Worker will maintain and repair building systems and perform other maintenance duties within the Housing Program. This person will provide timely and effective maintenance and repairs while ensuring all interactions with tenants is respectful and supportive.

** We are currently hiring for a one (1) year contract position.

The full-time work schedule will be 37.5 hours per week, working across various locations.

Valid G Class driver’s license and regular access to a reliable vehicle are required.

Travel throughout Waterloo Region.

A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check will be required pre-employment. **

Key Responsibilities:

· Maintain all building systems in good repair by conducting regular preventive maintenance and connecting with system contractors as appropriate

· Maintain equipment in good repair and safe working condition including in tenant units and common areas, working with Property Services Director and/or external contractors when needed

· Develop and maintain accurate records and administration for all regular and emergency maintenance and repairs, pest control, tenant maintenance and repair requests and maintain all necessary equipment logs

· Communicate regularly with Housing Director/team regarding any concerns or issues arising, as well as ongoing project management (i.e. pest control, unit refurbishment etc.)

· Ensuring that common areas are well maintained including paint and floor maintenance

· Notify House of Friendship Property Services Director of building structural (including roof and building exterior) issues

· Respond to tenant maintenance and repair requests

· Emergency clean up (e.g. following a plumbing breakdown)

· Support indoor/outdoor maintenance staff and external contractors in the execution of their work at the program (communicate issues and priorities);

· Order, maintain supply levels and receive and store all consumables for Housing program sites

· Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) binder as required at each site where cleaning supplies are used and stored

· Participate in Tenant Unit Inspections

· Participate as part of the Property Services team in Capital Replacement and project planning and implementation

Skills & Experience:

· Minimum Grade 12 education required

· Trade certification is an asset

· Minimum 5 years of experience working in building maintenance, construction or related field required

· Knowledge and experience in a related field is preferred; carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, painting and refurbishing

· Knowledge of building code, property standards, fire, health and safety regulations preferred

· Skilled at detailed record keeping and task completion

· Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected

· Exemplary emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, conflict management and problem solving skills required

· Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members

· Experience or strong interest in working with diverse populations including people from various cultural backgrounds, income levels, and sensitivity to their needs

· Experience with and commitment to using an anti-racism, anti-oppressive and trauma informed approach to consultation, program design, evaluations of processes and service delivery

· Must be dependable, professional, flexible, a team player, and have a positive attitude

· Respectful, supportive and engaging approach to persons with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, addictions, mental illness and other life challenges

· Excellent project, timeline and deadline management skills including skills in logistics, planning and detailed record keeping

Compensation:

At House of Friendship all compensation ranges are categorized under a series of “grades” and we base our payment structure on internal equity. When determining rate of pay, a candidate’s past related experience will be taken into consideration along with where others with similar experience are currently on the pay grid.

Grade: 5

Min: $26.77

Mid: $30.72

Max: $34.67

Working Conditions:

  • One (1) year contract; 37.5 hours per week
  • Shared on call with other maintenance staff responding to after hours emergencies
  • This position involves heavy lifting; must be physically able to lift and move heavy items such as bags of softener salt
  • Encountering participants at program sites who may be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, and/or experiencing symptoms of mental illness can be expected
  • Travel throughout the region of Waterloo
