Job title: Medical Advisor – Physician

Job description: Overview

Are you a physician interested in playing a leadership role to prevent workplace injury and disease in British Columbia? We have an exciting opportunity for a Medical Advisor to join our strong team in the Medical Services department.

You’ll partner with adjudicative staff, occupational safety and hygiene officers, and community physicians to help injured workers in their recovery, rehabilitation, and safe return to work. You’ll play both a medico-legal role, sharing your opinions and recommendations about workers’ medical conditions, causes, and treatments. You’ll also apply your clinical expertise in examining injured workers and providing evidence-based medical care.

How you’ll make a difference: You’ll help people injured at work recover, return to work safely, and regain quality of life.

Where you’ll work

At WorkSafeBC, we currently offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operation needs of the position.

In this role, you’ll work primarily from your B.C. home and occasionally in your local area office. Let us know in your cover letter which of the following locations you’d like to designate as your local office: Abbotsford, Burnaby, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nelson, Prince George, Terrace, Victoria, Nanaimo, or Courtenay.

We offer a flexible Monday to Friday work week with a full- or part-time schedule.

What you’ll do

  • Evaluate medical impairments and disabilities, and share your opinions about cause, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis
  • Provide evidence-based medical recommendations to adjudicating officers making claim entitlement decisions
  • Examine injured workers and provide them with timely medical care
  • Collaborate with community physicians to ensure workers’ disability- and medical-management needs are being met

Is this a good fit for you?

We’re looking for people who can:

  • Apply academic and clinical knowledge and experience to find effective, personalized, and supportive solutions that help injured workers recover and return to work safely
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment with both medical and non-medical colleagues
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills

  • Eligible for full licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia
  • A minimum of five years of experience in family practice and an interest in sports, rehabilitation, mental health, or occupational medicine
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety and disability management concepts, including return-to-work planning
  • Willing to work in a team-based environment
  • Excellent communication skills

Important to know

Before we can finalize any offer of employment, you must:

  • Successfully meet the legal requirements under the Criminal Records Review Act to work with children and/or vulnerable adults
  • Confirm you’re legally entitled to work in Canada and eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C.
