About The Role

The Environmental Monitor is responsible for the monitoring and implementing of the project environmental plan at both the field and documentary level, performing audits, ensuring compliance, and making recommendations as necessary. They may also assist with regulatory permits application and reporting as required by project needs and in training of personnel in the respectful stewardship of completing the construction project with minimal impact on wildlife and biology. Please note that this project is located in the Yukon. Flights from Edmonton, Calgary, or Vancouver are provided.

As an Environmental Monitor at Graham, you will:

  • Conduct / assist with the monitoring of environmental aspects, including wildlife; Species at Risk; migratory birds; fish and fish habitat; discharge water quantity and quality; excavated materials management; impacted materials; waste management; erosion and sediment control; dust control; spill prevention and spill response; archaeological discoveries; protection of cultural heritage resources; and Sustainability Plan objectives.
  • Perform field inspections, surveys, sampling and walk downs of environment-related activities to assure field activities, conditions, and outcomes correspond with the requirements of all applicable environmental laws and standards, environmental contractual obligations, Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Policy and best management practices.
  • Monitor and inspect construction activities for compliance with environmental obligations; complete environmental inspections; and providing advice and recommendations for improving environmental protection and correcting any inefficient practices and / or issues of non-compliance.
  • Identify and record environmental problems and issue stop / modify work instructions to construction subcontractors where construction activities constitute or have the potential to result in non-compliance with applicable environmental laws or contract requirements.
  • Ensure on‐site field environmental mitigation are appropriately installed and are effective.
  • Update and maintain tracking databases for environmental issues and incidents; water sampling; soil sampling; excavated material; and waste.
  • Preparing weekly field monitoring/inspection reports to be sent out to clients and municipalities.
  • Ensure the Management System is implemented across the project and that Graham is meeting the requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with clients, consultants, regulators, superintendents, and project teams.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • B.Sc. or technical diploma in biology, forestry, agriculture, environmental science, or related similar discipline
  • Registered or eligible to be registered in a related professional association in Alberta (e.g. Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, Alberta Institute of Agrologists, ECO Canada), or certified as a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control by the Erosion and Sediment Control Association of Canada; and
  • Minimum five years’ experience in construction monitoring and environmental compliance.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of the YK Waters Act, Waters Regulation, Federal Canadian Fisheries Act and experience monitoring instream work.
  • Knowledge of standard soil and water sampling techniques and interpreting results.
  • Be physically fit to work alone on construction sites and to safely collect water samples during all weather conditions.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication with on‐site construction personnel and provide guidance as required.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting and applying mitigation measures.
  • Personable, friendly, self‐motivated, with a positive, professional attitude.
  • Competency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and related programs.
  • Willingness to continually learn and develop your professional work practices.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities.
  • Organized and detailed‐oriented with respect to field notes taking.
  • Current knowledge of AB/BC/YK environmental laws, regulations, policies, and permitting requirements.
  • Ability to calibrate, maintain and organize monitoring equipment.
