Job title: Associate Dean, Architecture and Applied Chemical and Environmental Science
Job description: This is an exciting opportunity to join the leadership team with the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology. The Associate Dean is responsible for providing leadership to the faculty, staff and students in a number of specified programs within the faculty. This includes leading the development, delivery and review of programs and supervision of teaching and learning processes within the faculty to ensure quality and relevancy of program outcomes. It also includes the planning and administration of resources and the development of industry partnerships and initiatives in collaboration with other departments within the Faculty and College.
The Associate Dean plays a key role in attracting and developing talent, creating an engaging work environment and managing performance to ensure faculty commitment to quality teaching, professional development and currency in their discipline. They contribute to building a strong identity, positive reputation and a clear sense of direction of programs through educational objectives that are current with industry and community, effective, relevant to student needs and consistent with the Faculty and College strategic direction.
Who We Are
The Faculty of Applied Science and Technology (FAST) provides practical, hands-on learning opportunities that can be carried from the classroom to the workplace. Our high-intensity and industry-renowned programs equip students with relevant knowledge and real-world problem-solving skills. From applied computing to engineering, architectural technology to chemistry and skilled trades, FAST graduates have more opportunities in a rapidly changing world. FAST currently has approximately 7000 students and offers 43 programs including bachelor’s degrees, advanced diplomas, diplomas, post grad certificates and certificates. Our schools pride themselves on their project-based approach to learning often working with industry partners and often engaging in applied research as a means to enriching the student experience and to helping students build relationships with potential employers prior to graduation. We are proud of organizing events such as Women in the Trades, Testing the Trades, Hackathons, Skills competitions, and we support 15 student-run clubs.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Providing academic leadership in the development, delivery and currency of diploma, degree and graduate programs of specified programs.
- Hiring high quality full and part-time faculty within his/her program cluster and negotiating in regard to Standard Workload Forms and part-time contracts.
- Ensuring the development of a strong identity, a positive reputation and a clear sense of mandate and direction within the programs through the achievement of shared educational objectives that are current, effective, relevant to student needs and consistent with the strategic direction of the College.
- Facilitating the development of a sense of accountability and commitment to shared responsibility among the faculty and staff of the programs, in particular with regard to the development and administration of the school budget, and the effective and efficient allocation of resources to address both immediate operational requirements and longer-term priorities of the programs.
- Ensuring students receive effective advisement and support and ensuring the smooth and positive functioning of the programs through the identification, mediation and resolution of any conflicts involving students, faculty or staff.
- Providing leadership to ensure a high quality of teaching, and faculty commitment to professional development.
- Working with Professional Advisory Committees and Faculty to ensure currency of curriculum.
- Developing program budgets and enrolment plans in conjunction with the Dean, Operations Manager and Faculty leadership team, and managing both to ensure the provision of appropriate facilities and resources.
- Implementing a flexible, responsive Faculty academic plan as part of the academic planning process of the college.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for education along with:
- Master’s degree in related field of study (i.e. Chemical Sciences, Architecture, Business)
- 7 years of experience in a post-secondary educational environment and/or significant leadership experience in applied chemical sciences, environment sciences or architecture (Equivalency will be considered)
- You have the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated experience cultivating and contributing successful team environments by applying excellence in leadership, collaboration, team building, effective communication, exceptional interpersonal and management skills.
- With an understanding of cultural diversity and employment equity, the successful candidate will cultivate and contribute to a successful team environment by applying excellence in leadership, team building, effective communication, exceptional interpersonal and management skills.
- Demonstrated creative problem-solving, critical thinking and project management skills, and an ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously are essential.
- Commitment to the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning and to a student-centred environment is a must.
