Position Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Communications Representative is responsible for providing 24 hour communication services for all stakeholders throughout the hospital, monitoring and responding to critical alarms, registering patients as well as additional responsibilities e.g. Management of the Safe, Patient Entertainment devices.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintaining communications for all system stakeholders through the use of the switchboard console, multiple paging systems, cellular phones, and announcing codes via overhead paging.
  • Monitoring and responding to alarms displayed at communications centre.
  • Demonstrating sound judgement and good problem solving skills when prioritizing and handling calls and alarms.
  • Utilizing excellent customer service skills when answering and directing telephone calls.
  • Providing registration services when required.
  • Covering breaks for Bed Allocation Representatives as needed.
  • Provides customer service in managing the Patient Entertainment device program.
  • Adheres to data quality processes as directed, inclusive of validating health cards
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the direct manager and/or Team Lead

Qualifications

Education:

  • Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Successful completion of a Medical Terminology course required
  • Successful completion of the Hospitals Electronic Medical Record (EMR) training required upon hire
  • Completion of Medical Office Administration program is an asset
  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary diploma/degree is an asset

Experience:

  • Two (2) years OSMH switchboard experience or demonstrated competency required
  • Previous registration experience would be an asset.
  • Previous related working experience in a health care environment would be an asset.

Competencies:

  • Demonstrated computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills in English (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to positively interact with a range of individuals in a variety of situations, which require tact, discretion and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to be highly motivated and flexible with the ability to adapt quickly to new situations/challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload and multitask under pressure
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality and patient information verification
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a productive team member
  • Demonstrated the ability to provide excellent customer service to all patients and system stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
