Job description: Position Summary: The Agricultural Specialist is responsible for managing a Three Bay Hydroponic Greenhouse with Bato (Dutch) Bucket Vine Crop System and Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) Leaf Crop System and Hoop Houses at Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF).  Location: Ascension Island, Space Force Base Essential Duties & Job Functions: Manage an 8700 sq. ft. greenhouse with two (2) bay Dutch Bucket Systems and one (1) bay NFT channel system, which includes plant maintenance, nutrient and pH management, water management, positive airflow, temperature, and humidity control, and pest and disease control.Manage two (2) 3,260 sq. ft. Hoop Houses.Manage plant scheduling and organization to project all plant needs on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to produce the optimum result for maximum plant yield.Track and order new productManage Hydroponics budget.Track plant yield per quantity/pound and prepare monthly reports for delivery to management and generate quarterly/annual CDRL reports for management reporting.Utilize knowledge of pest and disease control i.e. IPM to minimize impact to crop.Ensure organization and cleanliness of the facility while performing job duties. Supervise growing staff for both hydroponics and hoop houses in daily operations.Performs related work as assigned. Accountable For: Experience in hydroponics systems and vegetable farming.Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to food handling and safety.Following all safety protocols and policies. Demonstrates commitment to safety first.  Communicate safety concerns.  Promotes a safe work environment.Excellent organizational skills.Problem-solving skills.Skill in the use of common office machinery, including copiers, fax machines, and computers.Ability to work with little or no supervision.Ability to supervise an Agricultural Specialist and a staff of Growers.Ability to order supplies/equipment and maintain required inventories for hydroponics and hoop houses.Ability to perform mathematic functions.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.Ability to work harmoniously with others.Ability to perform assigned duties in a timely, cost-effective manner Job Requirements (Education, Experience, Professional Associations): MandatoryExperienced and/or knowledgeable in growing vegetables, herbs, microgreens indoors by using hydroponic methods, primarily using soil-less growing techniques.Experienced and/or knowledgeable in growing vegetables, fruit trees, and berry bushes in a traditional soil garden.Licensed Pesticide Applicator.Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Arboriculture, Plant Science, or related field, and/or equivalent experience with a proven track record in agricultural settings.Establish planting schedules and record planting data to include yields/weights.Must be able to understand and interpret plant monitoring and documentation of growth and plant health data sets.Must obtain and maintain a valid Passport.Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and subsequent annual physical. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.The ability to obtain and maintain a Favorable National Agency Check w/Inquiries (NACI) PreferredBachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in Horticulture.This job operates in a greenhouse environment with a cooling system and in soil-based Hoop Houses without air conditioning.Certified Master Gardener.Experienced in hydroponic systems and structural maintenancePrevious experience working on a military installation.Previous experience working in a remote location. Physical Requirements:This position requires the ability to use hands/fingers, reaching with hands and arms, walking, standing ,and sitting on a daily basis, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
