Agronomic Research Specialist, Carman, MB

Bayer Crop Science is seeking a highly motivated individual to become part of the multi-disciplinary Trait & Pipeline Delivery (TPD) organization. The Agronomic Research Specialist will partner with and support the Site Lead and TPD Team to effectively coordinate and deliver seed processing and production processes to support worldwide evaluation and commercialization of agricultural products. The Agronomic Research Specialist will also administer and execute projects to ensure compliance, support site safety programs and develop relationships with internal and external partners and key influencers.

What you will do:

  • Manage the canola seed processing and packaging program at the site
  • Recruit, train, supervise and support the growth and development of temporary employees including Summer Research Assistants, seasonal labor and contractors as needed throughout the season
  • Assist in the execution of observation and seed production nurseries for canola, corn and soybean
  • Support quality and efficiency initiatives benefitting site operations
  • Implement HSE procedures and programs for safe operation of the research program
  • Maintain facilities and equipment for effective and efficient program operation
  • Represent Bayer Crop Science and the TPD group on field tours, industry seminars, etc.
  • Partner with other Agronomic Research Specialists or Field Testing Agronomists within the TPD and North America Field Testing Operations teams as well as Scientists and Planning teams

Scope of the Job:

  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of the research program with respect to budgetary guidelines and expectations.
  • Support the site HSE program as it applies to TPD
  • Plays a vital role in trial preparation including seed processing, packaging, shipping, protocol review, trial placement and mapping/field design
  • Utilize proprietary software and equipment for inventory management, data collection and quality control
  • Develop, maintain and implement the use of controlled SOP documents, QMS procedures and investigative protocols
  • Comply with all CFIA and Bayer Crop Science regulatory compliance guidelines for handling and shipping treated seed material
  • Regular interaction with other ARS’s, FTA’s, Site Leads, Planning Managers and Scientists is expected to facilitate efficient trial planning and placement, sharing of ideas and techniques and quick response to scenarios that may arise (e.g. weather or pests affecting trials, logistical issues affecting shipping)

Who you are:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Agriculture or related field with 1 year/summer agricultural research experience; or Agricultural diploma and 3+ years agricultural research experience
  • Experience coordinating/supporting operations for field research or experience in production scheduling
  • Operation and maintenance of agricultural research lab equipment
  • Effective team leadership qualities including excellent organizational and motivational skills, accurate record keeping and attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis and experimental field research design principles
  • Computer skills related to data acquisition and analysis, proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and precision agriculture technology
  • Appropriate provincial driver’s license is preferred
  • Ability to work long hours and manage seasonal overtime of full and part-time staff in accordance with applicable provincial regulations
  • Broad knowledge preferred of Canadian crop production and farming practices, canola, corn and/or soybean agronomy, plant breeding and precision agriculture applications
  • First Aid certification, provincial pesticide application license and TDG certifications are preferred
