University of Calgary Continuing Education (UCCE) is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Associate Director, Domestic Programs.
The University of Calgary Continuing Education (UCCE) houses one of Canada’s largest and most successful continuing education departments. It is a multi-disciplinary unit offering diploma, certificate and non-credit programs using on-site and online technologies for course delivery.
In support of the University of Calgary’s core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is mandated to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of lifelong learning opportunities.
The Associate Director, Domestic Programs position reports to the Director, Continuing Education, and works closely with other Associate Directors, Operational Managers and Program Managers in a cross-functional and collaborative team environment.
The Associate Director, Domestic Programs is responsible for the academic and financial outcomes of all non-credit programming offered by the Domestic Programs portfolio within Continuing Education. Such programming areas must provide high-quality educational experiences to significant numbers of adult learners in fields relating to the mandate of the University of Calgary, industry and labour market requirements, while generating revenues (from tuition, fees, and third-party sponsorship) which meets established financial objectives of their development and delivery. The Associate Director, must either directly undertake, or supervise the undertaking of, all leadership and management tasks required to successfully plan, design, deliver, and evaluate adult and continuing education seminars, courses, and programs of study within the Domestic Programming area.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Academic program planning:
- Assessing learning needs and demand
- Developing market responsive programs
- Marketing courses and programs effectively
- Overseeing and evaluating the delivery of instruction
- Evaluating and revising programs; and ensuring the integrity of any credentials offered
Entrepreneurial innovation and financial management:
- Seek opportunities to develop academic programs that generate positive net revenues
- Setting prices which both encourage access to high-quality education and ensure the recovery of all related costs
- Ensure adequate levels of total enrolment and average enrolments per course section
- Control costs
- Monitor and report on financial outcomes
- Leadership, management, and supervision of staff members and instructors having responsibility for all aspects of the development, delivery, and evaluation of non-degree-credit academic programs in the domestic portfolio.
- Nurturing and sustaining relationships with the range of stakeholders essential to the success of non-degree-credit academic programs (including instructors, students, representatives of professional associations and employers, members of faculty and staff at the University of Calgary, Government partners and other external partners)
- Organizational development and community-building: ensuring that the structure and culture of his/her working group encourages innovation, communication, trust, quality improvement, team-spirit, and a high level of performance; ensuring that their working group complies with UCalgary and Continuing Education policies, communicates effectively, and collaborates actively with people outside the working group).
- Serves as a member of the Continuing Education Director’s Advisor Council, Teaching and Learning Leaders Network, Council for Academic Planning and Policy. Co-lead the Programs Committee and contribute to the overall refinement and achievement of the Continuing Education mission, mandate, and business strategy
In addition, the following accountabilities will form part of the expectations of the position:
- Recruit, retain, and develop the staff members and instructors required for the academic and financial success of the program area(s) under his/her leadership.
- Manage human resources, including staff scheduling, leaves, utilization, and performance reviews
- Assume accountability and authority for HR transactions including time reporting, job changes, new hires, and new positions.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with instructors, students, employers, professional bodies and other faculties of the University to ensure profitable, high-quality, student-centered, continuing education offerings and administrative support services
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with university service departments and vendors providing services to courses (e.g. bookstore, library, printing services, communications media, and food services.)
- Ensure business process compliance with Continuing Education and UCalgary standards and policies.
- Prepare or supervise the preparation of annual, program-area plans, and provide input, as requested to other program-areas and unit-wide plans.
- Work effectively in collaboration with Continuing Education and UCalgary staff responsible for the functions of finance, HR, information technology, marketing, and academic governance, as well as with other Continuing Education leaders.
- Fulfill all obligations regarding budget ownership for their programming area(s).
- Build and sustain adequate knowledge of all software required for effective performance of duties (e.g., Destiny One, Desire to Learn, PeopleSoft, Power BI).
- Maintain, as appropriate to the programming area(s) under their direction, knowledge of pertinent substantive and pedagogical issues (including, as appropriate, those relating to the utilization of educational technologies and eLearning strategies).
- Collaborate with Marketing team to ensure program-specific communication, marketing, and recruitment strategies are developed, implemented, and evaluated.
- Exercise appropriate judgment in areas such as conflict resolution, problem-solving, and managing competing priorities and periods of peak activity or deadlines.
- Build and sustain an understanding of the University of Calgary context, and nurture as required appropriate working relationships with other members of the university community.
- Prepare proposals and respond to RFPs either as the lead or as a contributor with other Continuing Education leaders, as appropriate.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Masters or terminal degree (preferably in business administration, adult education or a related education or social science).
- At least seven years’ experience in increasingly senior roles, preferably within the Post-Secondary Continuing Education sector.
- Extensive experience in planning, designing and promoting educational programs to adults.
- Experience analyzing enrolment, pricing and other relevant data to inform program portfolio decisions
- Strong financial acumen in budget development, forecasting and product analysis
- Excellent communicator who can represent UCalgary’s continuing education interests at all levels by demonstrating professionalism and sound business acumen
- Expertise and experience building strong working relationships with individuals, business and community organizations, educational institutions, accreditation bodies, and government agencies
- Extensive experience in learning needs analysis, curriculum and program development
- Strong understanding of issues in human resource management and supervision within a unionized environment is an asset
- Knowledge and understanding of education within a post-secondary organizational culture
- Capability to successfully manage competing priorities with minimal supervision and direction.
- Subject matter expertise of one or more pertinent, substantive programming area(s).
- Proficient with and ability to quickly learn relevant software applications, including Microsoft Office applications, Desire to Learn (LMS), PeopleSoft, Destiny-One, Power BI, etc.
- Experience teaching/facilitating high quality graduate, undergraduate or continuing education programs in mixed delivery formats (e.g. on-campus and on-line) is an asset.
- Experience in instructional design is an asset
