Reporting to the General Merchandise Manager (GMM) this position is responsible for sourcing quality merchandise at extreme values and managing said merchandise to maximize the sales and profits of the company.

Job Responsibilities:

Purchasing

  • Source and negotiate extreme value to ensure maximum profitability staying within the category budget parameters and strategic company objectives
  • Communicate and liaise GMM’s to ensure quality product and correct values are consistent within the company directives
  • Draft purchase orders with relevant and accurate information for data entry

Merchandise Management

  • Achieve corporate budgets objectives regarding gross margin, sales and turnover
  • Category planning, budgeting and forecasting with GMM
  • Monitor sales, mark-downs, inventory levels, turnover and GMROI’s weekly
  • Analyze past purchases and event results to maximize future productivity
  • Responsible for inventory allocation including monitoring key store attributes by market and store type
  • Monitor existing inventories and initiate markdown as necessary

Vendors

  • Make trips to relevant vendors as required to assess merchandise
  • Attend trade shows as necessary to monitor industry trends and merchandise availability
  • Develop and maintain professional vendor relationships, while expanding vendor base

Advertising/Promotions

  • Develop annual calendar of exciting merchandise events in conjunction with GMM and Advertising team
  • Source frequent events and weekly promotions to maximize category sales and profit
  • Plan and develop media information as required in conjunction with the advertising department
  • Develop in-store promotional materials including product knowledge, training and signage when applicable
  • Plan and direct in-store promotional activities

People Management

  • Support Merchandise Assistant(s) in their development and achievement of goals
  • Set standards of performance and constructively counsel subordinates to provide leadership for growth in their capacity and improve overall department strength to ensure effective succession planning
  • Ensure all respective team members are working consistently within their relevant job description

Competitive analysis

  • Identify and visit key competitors frequently to monitor products and values and overall industry analysis
  • Stay abreast of merchandise trends and successes of competition

Miscellaneous

  • Liaise with other internal departments
  • Operate as an effective team member through honest and respectful business communication
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

  • Three to five years of general merchandise/off price buying experience
  • Strong negotiation skills and an understanding of the finesse and subtle nuances needed in negotiating
  • Understanding of the importance of analysis and planning; can organize, prioritize and delegate in a challenging multi-tasking environment
  • Communication skills: Strong interpersonal skills, a good listener, good communicator and solid presentation skills;
  • Ability to manage, motivate and build a team. Lead by example with a great work ethic, initiative and passion for the job;
  • Computer skills: Primarily Excel, Word and a solid Process Management mind-set to pick up on our proprietary I.S. systems;
  • Bilingualism (English & French), an asset;
  • Related JDA AS400 computer systems experience, an asset
