The Caretaking – Area 1 within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Caretaker .

The Caretaking department, as a part of Facilities Management, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are cleaned and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities.

The Caretaking department is responsible to provide a professional, efficient and cost effective cleaning service to the campus building entries, corridors, stairs, elevator lobbies and cars, washrooms, shower and locker rooms, classrooms, lecture theatres, teaching and performing arts theatres, sports facilities, offices, teaching labs, research labs (including areas that support animals and other research activities) in which cleaning functions are performed on set schedules. Waste and recycling removal, building entrance maintenance and window cleaning are part of the Caretaking portfolio. Finishes in these spaces vary from concrete to carpet. The Caretaking staff carries out a variety of duties from light dusting to floor scrubbing using heavy machines. Work is carried out on a 24-hour basis, 365-days per year. Caretakers are expected to be available for any shift in the operational day.

Daily Supervision is provided by an in-scope Supervisor and/or Lead Hand. This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. Staff will be required to work a variety of shifts, including days, afternoons, nights, weekends and paid holidays. Transfer to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. There is a potential for emergency callouts. Heavy lifting and use of ladders are required.

There is potential for exposure to hazardous materials in labs and classrooms. Employees will be entering private offices and workspaces of others so high level of trust, confidentiality and discretion are expected. Observation of work area to identify and report all repair work required, emergency situations or security risks is expected.

This position would not be suitable for someone with plant, dust or chemical allergies or sensitivities.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Full cleaning of washrooms and showers including partitions, fixtures, dispensers, floors, walls.
  • Cleaning of offices.
  • Remove waste and recycling in accordance with established procedures.
  • Wet and dry mopping of floors.
  • Spray buffing of properly cleaned floors.
  • Vacuuming of all carpeted areas, mats, furniture, partitions.
  • Carpet extraction and routine cleaning of carpet areas, furniture and partitions.
  • Cleaning of entrance doors, glass and partitions.
  • Stripping and waxing of hard surface floors.
  • Cleaning of elevator interiors and doors.
  • Cleaning of walls, ceiling fixtures, vents and diffusers.
  • Dusting surfaces at various heights.
  • Cleaning of all ancillary furniture and equipment owned or leased by the University.
  • Depending on the season, will include, as directed, snow shoveling – clearing snow from building entrances, steps, sidewalks, loading docks, and patios using shovels, brooms or other equipment.
  • Ensure area assigned is cleaned and well maintained to the team cleaning standards specified and in accordance with green cleaning program training received.
  • Ensure that items requiring repair or maintenance, security or safety matters, unusual conditions or additional cleaning requirements for the assigned area are brought to the attention of the supervisor for follow up.
  • Accept shift assignments, ensure regular work attendance and timely reporting start and finish for each shift.
  • Ensure that equipment used is properly cleaned and that equipment, supplies and tools are properly replaced, re-stocked and secured at the end of the shift.
  • Ensure that keys assigned are used only for the purpose issued, and that they will be kept secure from sign-out until they are returned at the end of each shift worked.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a level of education equivalent to minimum Grade.
  • While previous Caretaking experience would be an asset, related experience will be considered.
  • Must have good physical health and endurance, have the strength and stamina to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 25 lbs or 11.5 Kg) and perform repetitive physical tasks involving bending, stretching, walking and kneeling.
  • Willingness and availability to work a variety of shifts, including days, afternoons, nights, weekends and paid holidays.
  • Ability to climb ladders to a maximum height of 10 feet.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, theatres, computer rooms, lounges, food service areas, libraries, stairs, washrooms, showers, elevators, entrances, common areas and research laboratories, including areas that support animals and other research activities.
  • Safety conscious and wear required personal protective equipment when on the job.
  • Ability to work with tools and equipment ranging from simple hand-held tools to simple motorized equipment following established procedures.
  • Ability to understand both verbal and written information, instructions and ideas presented and ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. (English language proficiency will be assessed at the time of the interview.)
  • Communicate with co-workers and the general public in a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Proven record of working successfully in team environment.
  • Taking responsibility for completing assigned tasks in a timely fashion with high regard for discretion and confidentiality.
  • Must have proven record of providing superior customer service including customer needs assessment and meeting quality standards for services.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
