Job description: Reporting to the Director of Education, the Children’s Education Supervisor, Community Programs is responsible for supervising the planning and delivery of the Toronto Botanical Garden’s (TBG) community education and outreach programs, delivering on TBG’s mandate to foster an appreciation for and stimulate children’s curiosity about nature and gardening through hands-on experience.

The Children’s Education Supervisor, Community Programs will lead and deliver community programs to children ages 3 to 11 during March Break, summer and on occasional evenings and weekends throughout the year; coordinate and deliver the Growing Under Glass program based at Allan Gardens Children’s Conservatory to grade three students; and teach curriculum-based programs to students from kindergarten to grade eight in the spring and fall. This position works collaboratively with the Education Supervisor, School Programs seasonal contract staff, student interns and volunteers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

TEACHING

  • Develop, coordinate and deliver March Break and summer camps
  • Develop, coordinate and deliver preschool, family and community programs
  • Develop, coordinate and deliver all Teaching Garden events
  • Develop, coordinate, deliver and report on the ‘Growing Under Glass’ program at Allan Gardens Children’s Conservatory to grade three students from GTA priority schools
  • Assist Children’s Education Supervisor, School Programs in the delivery of school programs following Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines for pre-kindergarten to grade eight students across the GTA

ADMINISTRATION

  • Coordinate and manage online registration database
  • Recruit and supervise summer camps, family programs and Allan Gardens interns and volunteers; select, train, and employ intern and volunteer support in the daily operation of all programs, garden work, maintenance and administration
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations and other professionals to enhance and promote TBG’s recreational and community outreach offerings
  • Collaborate with Children’s Education Supervisor, School Programs on annual budget development; produce regular reports on attendance, income and expenses
  • Liaise with Director, Development to support fundraising initiatives for camps, family programs and community events and programs
  • Collaborate with Children’s Education Supervisor, School Programs to maintain education programming spaces, including the Teaching Garden
  • Collaborate with Children’s Education Supervisor, School Programs to hire, train and supervise support staff, providing regular feedback and performance reviews

MARKETING & PROMOTION

  • Use creative approaches to strategic program design, signage and cross-promotion with partner organizations
  • Work cooperatively with the Director, Marketing & Communications to promote the programs including writing copy for brochures, website, social media and the distribution of promotional materials

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ontario teaching or Early Childhood Education qualifications
  • At least two years teaching experience in horticulture and/or environmental/outdoor education
  • Sound knowledge of childhood and adolescent learning and development, with a good understanding of Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines in Science and Technology programs for Primary, Junior, or Intermediate grades
  • Proven excellence teaching young children in outdoor settings
  • Experience working with and/or managing volunteers in a not-for-profit setting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with both adult and child audiences
  • Creativity and problem solving skills; energy and enthusiasm
  • Experience maximizing social networking sites for program promotion
  • Current police reference check required
  • First Aid & CPR certificate required
  • Some flexibility in the work week, including weekend or evening work is required.
