The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Ambulatory Care and Atlantic Poison Center, the Clinical Leader Operations supports the efficient and effective operation of the Children’s Dentistry Clinic Team by assisting with the planning, organization and directing of clinical care consistent with the philosophy, vision, objectives and mission of the Health Centre. The Clinical Leader practices nursing to full scope and role models professional nursing practice, fostering the development of an environment in which the desired outcome of all activities is the enhancement of patient care while demonstrating strong leadership, organization and communication skills.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains efficient and effective operations of the Dentistry Clinic to provide patient care needs in collaboration with the Manager;
  • Acts as a liaison with the Chief of Dentistry to facilitate effective communication and collaboration between physicians and other members of the Dentistry team;
  • Assumes leadership roles within the Children’s Health Program including the Dentistry Care Team and Clinic Meetings, Quality & Patient Safety Committees (including review of all SIMS), Accreditation Teams, etc. The Clinical Leader may delegate shared responsibility for these committees where appropriate;
  • Participates in, and develops, service planning for Dentistry services to predict future needs and new directives and statistical data concerning patient/team activities;
  • Provides leadership in care team discussions and provides input and energy into efforts at improving clinic efficiency and functioning;
  • Uses the Nursing Process to full scope during Nurse led clinics;
  • Accurately assesses patient/family needs during clinic visits and telephone consultations; independently develops an individual nursing plan of care based on patient/family needs and expert nursing knowledge of pediatric dentistry, and continuously evaluates the plan making revisions as necessary;
  • Coordinates and develops plans of care for patients and families with complex care needs for both clinic and the operating room;
  • In collaboration with the Manager, identifies issues that have potential or actual impact on clinical care
  • Participates in interdisciplinary recruitment and selection as necessary;
  • Monitors clinic expenditures, submits billing information and plans/develops future financial needs in collaboration with the team physician leader and manager;
  • Actively participate in the resolution of patient, family and staff complaints by following the appropriate policies as outlined by the organization;
  • Demonstrates effective decision making and utilizes sound problem solving skills;
  • Mentors team members by supporting, teaching and role modeling in an effective manner;
  • Facilitates decision making in the team;
  • Demonstrates team building skills, with the ability to foster and create an environment where team members feel empowered and valued;
  • Monitors and evaluates patient care standards and makes recommendations/takes action for changes as appropriate;
  • Acts as a clinical resource for care team members regarding patient care issues;
  • Demonstrates a spirit of inquiry by examining current practice and identifying research questions for study;

Hours of Work

Monday – Friday; 0800-1600; 0830-1630

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required. Candidates with commensurate experience and education will be considered.

Licensed or eligible for licensure by the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia required.

  • Successful completion of CPR Level-C Health Care Provider within the past 12 months required.
  • Minimum three years recent pediatric surgical nursing experience required; 2 years related Ambulatory Care paediatric nursing experience preferred.
  • Previous supervisory and/or leadership experience preferred. Continuing education in leadership or team training an asset.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership, communication (verbal & written), and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an inter-professional team and to work independently required.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem solving, and decision making abilities required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and practice required.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to generate and implement innovative/creative solutions required.
  • Demonstrated competencies in the promotion of teamwork/team building through consultation and collaboration with all stakeholders required.
  • Demonstrated ability to be adaptable and flexible in responding to changes in patient/family and clinic needs required.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills required.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Family Centred Care required.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and ability to conduct oneself in a mature manner required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Windows, MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and competency in with Meditech/PCI preferred.
  • Competency in other languages considered an asset; French preferred.
