Job Summary
The Community Coordinator reports to the Farm Manager, Urban Farm and is responsible for assisting in the management of the Urban Farm community profile providing social outreach, marketing and working within the community to improve local food security. Additionally, the position is responsible for directing and leading volunteers in practicing urban farm principles and is responsible for the recruitment, screening, onboarding, placement, recognition, and training of all volunteers. The Community Coordinator will also be responsible for assisting with overall crop production as required.
Responsibilities
Program Coordination
- Creates and implements age-appropriate education programs for residents & school kids in the Abbotsford/ Mission areas.
- Provides program administration to include coordination of emails, scheduling, booking appts and maintaining Urban Farms online presence through the website and on social media.
- Responds to community inquiries, providing information and resources, and directing them accordingly.
- Coordinates family-friendly events and camps throughout the summer (June-August).
- Coordinates and hosts the sales booth at the local Farmer’s Market and other events as required.
- Partners with internal and external programs and stakeholders to deliver on-site tours, community sessions and initiate garden related activities as needed/desired.
- Represents Archway Urban Farm at community education events such as Earth Day and Berry Fest.
- Coordinates with the Crop Production Supervisor for daily and weekly schedule of activities
- Attends and participates in program meetings, and in all mandatory agency trainings.
- Other duties as assigned by the Farm Manager.
Volunteer Coordination:
- Provides support, leadership, and direction to volunteers in the Urban Farm program using a variety of techniques including coaching, training, and feedback.
- In coordination with the Farm Manager, recruits, screens, interviews, and selects volunteers for the Urban Farm program.
- Works closely with the Archway Volunteer Coordinator in having Criminal Record Checks completed, job descriptions created/updated and ensuring program and organization volunteer policies, procedures and practices are congruent.
- Using the volunteer management system, Better Impact ensures the volunteer personnel files are accurate, complete and in accordance with Archway Volunteer Policies and Procedures.
- Manages volunteer schedules to ensure adequate help & support for overall crop production is met.
- Working with the People & Culture Volunteer Coordinator, organizes, promotes, hosts and co-facilitates recruitment and attraction events and coordinates appreciation events for Urban Farm volunteers.
- Assists the Farm Manager in managing and addressing volunteer complaints using mediation and conflict resolution principles.
- Cultivates and maintains a strong, team-based culture with all volunteers, clients and partners, supporting positive and professional working relationships, and open communication amongst the team.
- Works and collaborates with the Crop Production Supervisor for crop production.
- Assist with overall crop production including seeding, bed prep, compost production, transplanting, weeding, fertilizer applications, harvesting and preparation of produce for market, as required.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Must maintain a Satisfactory Criminal Record
- Minimum of a High school Diploma; post-secondary education in Agriculture, Biology, or related field is an asset
- First Aid Certificate is an asset or willingness to be trained
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
Experience;
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a customer service position.
- Experience in program coordination and coordinating community events, is preferred.
- Experience working with children is an asset.
Knowledge and Skill Set
- Well-developed verbal, written, and active listening skills, able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds.
- Strong planning, organization and time management skills, and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Well-developed relationship building and networking skills for building rapport with clients, volunteers, suppliers, and other stakeholders, while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Strong computer competency, able to use Microsoft Office365, virtual meeting platforms such as Microsoft Teams, and CRM systems
- Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong understanding of food safety and safe working procedures with the ability to train volunteers based on those requirements.
- Ability to establish and review goals and objectives with senior management and mentors.
- Knowledge and demonstrated commitment to the connection between gardening, health and the
- environment; knowledge of local food security issues.
- Ability to respond creatively and flexibly to new programming opportunities
WORKING CONDITIONS
- The successful candidate will be required to provide their own transportation to Farmers’ Markets.
- This position requires physical labour related to garden maintenance and crop production, and will include periods of constant motion including walking, repetitive tasks, lifting, and long periods of standing.
- This position will including working outdoors in inclement weather.
- Willingness and flexibility to work weekends, specifically Saturdays is required.
- This position has a high-level of social interaction and engagement, requiring adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.
- Covid 19 vaccination is strongly recommended.
- Up-to-date Tetanus vaccine is strongly recommended.
