Job description: Black & McDonald’s Power Generation team is growing! The Construction Manager position is located at our office located in Tiverton, Ontario.

Construction Managers plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities of a construction company or a construction department within a company, under the direction of the Black & McDonald Site Manager or other B&M senior managers for the Bruce Power MCR (Major Component Replacement) Project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operations

  • Plans the work and ensures all necessary resources and materials are in-place to achieve the schedule requirements
  • Works closely with the other SCT members to achieve objectives and results
  • Responsible to ensure tradespersons have the training and qualifications to complete the work safely, according to procedures, meet quality requirements and workmanship standards
  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate construction projects from start to finish according to schedule, specifications and budget
  • Develop plans and strategies for identifying and planning for logistics, tools, equipment, consumables, PPE and materials required to ensure safety standards are met and cost effective project delivery at all technical levels
  • Coordinate field walk downs
  • Continually strives for better and more economical methods relative to approaches to and performance of the work
  • Endeavours to improve the client’s knowledge and create a positive perception of building trade labour, works with the local unions to resolve any adverse perceptions
  • Prepare progress reports and issue progress schedules to clients

Safety

  • Provide visible leadership and promote both Nuclear Safety and conventional safety in all aspects of daily activities
  • Use and discuss on a regular basis the Human Performance Tools

Business Conduct

  • Responsible for good working practices including procedural adherence, completion of field required documentation, trade professionalism, enforcing disciplinary action per the contract policies, job site housekeeping and enforcing communications through the chain of command
  • Represent company on matters such as business services and union contracts negotiation
  • Maintains a positive corporate image through the professional presentation of our site facilities, vehicles, personnel and client communications (e.g. proposals, verbal and written correspondence etc.)

Financial & Planning

  • Prepare and submit construction project budget estimates
  • Plan and prepare construction schedules and milestones and monitor progress against established schedules
  • Prepare contracts and negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers and subcontractors

Quality

  • Develop and implement quality control programs

Human Resources

  • Maintains a harassment free work environment, “zero tolerance” for demeaning comments and actions based on an employee’s sex, race, ethnic origin etc.;
  • Fosters a climate where enthusiasm and morale results in achievement of objectives and an atmosphere where outsiders wish to work;
  • Develops employees relative to skills and company growth goals, and actively participates in periodic and annual employee reviews and appraisals;
  • Hire and supervise the activities of subcontractors and subordinate staff

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A university degree in engineering or a college diploma in construction technology is an asset a trade certificate and a minimum of 5 years site leadership experience

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Several years of experience in the construction industry, including experience as a construction supervisor or field superintendent
  • Extensive experience in the construction industry may substitute for post-secondary education requirements
  • Nuclear security clearance

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Computer Literacy; MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and Black & McDonald JD Edwards
  • Familiar with Project Management Processes; Project Controls, Work Planning & Scheduling, Labour Relations and Contract Management.
  • Analytical with strong problem solving skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team based environment
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills
