About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Public Health Northern Zone Director, the Consultant – Health Equity, provides advanced knowledge, leadership and coordination for Public Health Northern Zone workforce development in the area of health equity. The Consultant strengthens the understanding and application of health equity principles, evidence, tools, best practices and supports to build a culture of health equity within public health practice.

Demonstrating leadership behaviours and capabilities, consistent with LEADS in a Caring Environment framework, which include Leads Self, Engages Others, Develops Coalitions, Achieves Results and Transforms Systems, the Consultant will be accountable to support the NSH mission and vision in the implementation and evaluation of all required health information and technology for decision making. In addition, the Consultant will be accountable to:

  • Provide expert level advice, evidence and best practice on advancing the understanding of health equity and health disparities.
  • Provide guidance, direction and advice to staff and teams to assist them in the application of health equity tools and methods.
  • Contribute to performance development and assessment of staff.
  • Participate in strategic, operational and financial planning as well as priority setting exercises with the leadership team to ensure a robust health equity lens is applied at all stages of program planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Work with a team to develop plans to strengthen the capacity of public health staff in the zone to apply principles of health equity for social change and better health outcomes for Nova Scotians.
  • Collaborate with NSH and other partners to translate evidence, develop plans for building capacity around health equity and facilitates uptake and understanding of health equity practices and policies within NSH and with partner organizations.
  • Coordinate local projects, initiatives and teams working on health equity and action to address disparities.
  • Influences community health board plans to address health equity issues.
  • May participate in the development of funding proposals for research or other projects related to health equity.
  • As appropriate, contributes to the transformation of the broader health system at the provincial program and system levels by identifying opportunities to incorporate health equity principles and actions.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Abides by the ethical codes of their respective disciplines, and also to the ethics relevant to public health practice.
  • Advises zone and provincial leadership teams on the integration of health equity in planning, implementation, indicator development and work force development.
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Health Promotion, or other relevant field, with five (5) to seven (7) years’ relevant experience, OR;
  • Master’s in Public Health, Health Promotion, or equivalent, plus three (3) to five (5) years’ of relevant experience (equivalent combination of education and seven (7) years’ progressive leadership experience may be considered)
  • Eligible for registration with a professional body as appropriate
  • Experience in planning, development and evaluation of public health programs, services and initiatives using appropriate approaches to reduce health inequities
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the Core Competencies for Public Health and LEADS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of oppression as a social determinant of health and awareness and study of one’s own power and privilege
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders using a variety of methods
  • Demonstrated success in building strategic partnerships, networks, coalitions, and collaborative working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners to support health equity work
  • Demonstrated judgment, decision making, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated planning, organization and time management skills. Ability to deal with competing priorities
  • Demonstrated innovative systems thinking with an understanding of working with communities
  • Demonstrated high standards of ethics, integrity, respect and accountability
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours

  • Long Assignment Full Time/ 100% FTE/ 75 Hours Bi-Weekly

Compensation and Incentives

$36.33- $45.41 hourly
