Like a language interpreter, historical interpreters at Fort Edmonton Park help translate Edmonton’s unique and rich histories and cultures to guests from all over the world. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about the past and our city, and love to tell stories, teach and share heritage skills. Our living history museum strives to create an immersive and engaging environment. Help our team by interacting with guests in unique and engaging ways while dressed in period wardrobe!

With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Interpret Edmonton’s history and culture as it relates to Edmonton within one of our historical eras: 1846 Fort, 1885 Street, 1905 Street or 1920 Street
  • Interpret a period of Edmonton’s history to the visiting public using a variety of methods, including conversation, re-enactment, role-playing, tours and hands-on activities/ demonstrations of historic and Traditional skills in historical wardrobe
  • Participate in and lead large-scale interpretive programs and pre-registered groups such as historical talks, dramatic vignettes and special event activities
  • Assist in researching and developing new stories and activities
  • Assist in the maintenance of artifacts and program supplies
  • Collect statistical information and document programs as required
  • Participate in high volume special events, outreach, media engagements, public events and other functions
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or higher or equivalent
  • Completion of the first year of a recognized diploma or degree program related to performing arts, history, education, recreation and leisure or museum studies is an asset
  • Some experience with program delivery for the general public, tour groups, children and other program users
  • Experience working in a museum, cultural centre or historic site is an asset
  • Highly developed interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate in a second language is an asset
  • Knowledge of Western Canadian History
  • Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions, including in the presence of allergens like bees, hay and animals
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates are required prior to employment
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Successful candidates must be willing to sign a media consent form in accordance with City policy and participate in media events

Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours per week. Successful candidates must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required
