THE OPPORTUNITY

Bereskin & Parr is looking for a highly motivated Director of Finance who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves. This position reports to the COO and is located in our Toronto Office. The overall objectives of this position are to effectively manage and provide leadership to the finance team in support of all financial functions of the firm and its related entities. This position is directly responsible for the establishment of financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems for all offices, and is expected to make recommendations with respect to overall efficiencies and staffing levels of the finance team, as well as ensure that internal controls are well designed and function effectively.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

• Manage the department and motivate all team members
• Provide leadership, mentoring and training to all staff
• Ensure accounting processes and procedures are well documented and up to date
• Ensure the effectiveness of all firm financial functions including accounting, financial reporting, billing, collections, trust accounting, and partnership accounting
• Active participation on the firm’s Finance Committee
• Oversee the preparation and analysis of the consolidated monthly financial statements
• Oversee the preparation of annual firm budgets, in collaboration with individual practice groups, committees and departments
• Ensure internal controls are adequate and are being followed
• Update where required
• Analyzing and responding to requests for customized financial information from committees, etc.
• Complete required annual filings for LSO, LawPro, etc.
• Maintain firm banking relationships, including annual reviews of credit facilities and quarterly compliance reporting
• Develop and supervise preparation of all reports and information required by the firm’s outside accountants for their year-end review and for annual tax filings

Qualifications include:

• Must hold a Chartered Professional Accountant designation or equivalent designation
• Must have a minimum 10 years of related management experience working in a law firm
• Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
• Excellent leadership skills
• Advanced Excel skills and analytical skills
• Experience working with Aderant will be an asset
• Must be a team player and able to work collaboratively with others
