They are active in the Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional sectors of the construction industry, providing new construction, renovations, alterations, additions, retrofits, as well as Project Management and Construction Management services to satisfy all construction requirements.

Summary of Role

The Director of Operations is a position of prime importance to the organization and will ultimately be measured by the profitability of the business. This individual is a key member of the Management Team and must possess strong business acumen with excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills. The Director of Operations is a driving force in developing IMC’s “Strategic Think” on new opportunities and takes ownership of transferring winning tenders/proposals into successfully managed and delivered projects for IMC– specifically “Strong Starts = Strong Finishes”. The Director of Operations oversees Estimating and Operations as they carry out the plan, measures results of the strategy, and reports back to the Management Team. The Director of Operations is entrusted with overseeing the results of quality projects, on time and within budget, utilizing safe and efficient methods that will ultimately ensure a positive reputation and give IMC the opportunity for repeat project business.

The Director of Operations is always a positive Culture Contributor possessing the ability to motivate, lead, coach and work with various team players including the IMC Management Team, and internal and external stakeholders. This person must be a driver of continuous improvement that challenges the status quo. On top of disciplined leadership, this position will be a mentor to all of those involved in the life of the project.

Strategic:

The Director of Operations must be strategic and innovative when it comes to leading the delivery of an estimate or project. The Director of Operations will be tasked to provide guidance to areas in which IMC can benefit and capitalize to improve the schedule and budget of the project. The Director of Operations will be up to date on construction trends to provide strategic insights to all staff and IMC projects.

Salesmanship:

The Director of Operations will possess high business acumen and present themselves as an effective ambassador for the IMC Team. Salesmanship will indicate that this individual presents themselves in a

professional manner and will listen to the client’s needs first and foremost to create a plan in which the IMC Team can execute. This person will be courteous, well-spoken and results driven.

Innovation:

The Director of Operations must look at each project from the client’s point of view and suggest means by which they can best meet the client’s expectations and maximize success for IMC. Provide leadership direction on alternate plans and creative methods of solving a problem. Responsible for estimating / pre-construction and operations strategy and execution angles, approaches and viability will all be part of the business innovation.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide leadership to the estimating/pre-construction and operations team and mentor and foster talent within the business units to train leaders for the future, instilling a high-performance culture.
  • Oversees total construction effort to ensure that project is constructed in accordance with design, budget, and schedule. This includes maintaining communications with client representatives, architect/engineer representatives and providing direction to the estimating/pre- construction and operation team and holds IMC accountable for results.
  • Reporting and Administration: maximizing the strengths of Procore and Sage, enforce standardized and effective policies and procedures; develop and lead strategies to implement work plans for tenders and proposals; establish, lead and monitor the developed strategy into an operational execution plan; proactively monitor, review, and forecast the contract delivery and on-site construction works. Provide regular reporting to the Vice President and Director of Finance for financial and production operations.
  • Responsible for attending Management Team Meetings and Organizational Development Meetings. Participate in corporate strategic planning sessions/retreat.
  • Assemble, report, and present the KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) of your specific business units on a quarterly basis and contribute to management KPI’s.
  • Responsible to ensure that any contact from any identified or suspected solicitor representing any unionized labour shall be handled and that the Management Team is advised immediately.
  • Responsible for facilitating all estimating business unit meetings. Establishing an agenda and ensuring minutes are kept and opportunity and estimating templates are fully utilized.
  • Lead immediate post-award meeting (IMC Project Startup Meeting) with the Estimator, Project Manager, Project Coordinator and Construction Superintendent and Vice President utilizing the IMC Project Start-Up checklist.
  • Develop and oversee the operating budget for all aspects of the business unit. Produce and authorize all budgets meeting company profit expectations. Provide input and data from accounting and finance to develop an accurate picture of all budgets monthly (pre-construction, construction, and post construction) with the goal of driving cost saving recommendations and solutions.
  • Attend Project Sites regularly (minimum once per month) and as required.
  • Participate in recruitment process for hiring new estimating / pre-construction and operations team members alongside HR.
  • Ensures all safety programs are adhered to and assists the Safety Business Unit as necessary.
  • Attend industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends.
  • Responsible for attending and actively participating in the weekly “What Matters Meeting.”
  • Responsible for sub-trade relationship management and ensuring effective trade alliances. Create and oversee a positive culture with sub trades. Sub trades are considered an effective tool and strategic partner in the estimating department.
  • Performance Management: proactively manages team performance utilizing performance management tool; identifies training gaps and address these gaps; and participates in assessing team salaries.

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary Education in Business Admin/Management or Construction-related Degree/Diploma.
  • 10+ years’ of experience in the construction industry
  • Minimum of 5 years’ in a Leadership/Executive position within the construction industry
  • Expert level experience and familiarity within the construction industry, with a strong emphasis on Institutional, Commercial, and Industrial (ICI) projects.
  • Technologically savvy with an advanced knowledge of MS Suite.
  • Experience or familiarity with Procore or Sage is considered an asset.
  • Acute awareness of risk management as it relates to Estimating and Operations including opportunities and tenders, lead validation and strategies, tender go/no-go decisions, prime contracts, subcontracts, contract deliverable compliance and other legal matters.
  • Highly experienced in general contracting and construction management in the ICI sectors. Knowledgeable on available resources and market trends that would affect project profitability and/or opportunities.
  • Possess an advanced understanding of the Construction Act, Prompt Payment Legislation, Ontario Building Code, Bonding and Construction Insurance.
  • Critical problem solving and major issue resolution skills.
  • Aggressive strategist with proven ability to lead pre-construction, construction and post-construction processes while holding the team accountable for cost, time/schedule, and quality.
  • Involvement with clients presenting solutions and concepts that will best meet the needs of the client as required.
  • Ability to develop, communicate and sell innovative ideas and communicate these with staff, client, consultants, and subcontractors to build long term relationships.
