Job title: Director, Warehousing and Logistics
Job description: The Director, Warehousing and Logistics, is a leadership role within Seaspan Shipyards, responsible for the functional strategy, development and design of warehousing, stores, materials management, logistics, freight, and customs across all three shipyards. The position is responsible for the operational execution and delivery of warehousing, stores, materials management, logistics, freight, and customs strategies for new construction at Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards (VSY). This includes responsibility for all VSY and subcontractor inventory handled at VSY and subcontractor’s facilities. The position coordinates international and domestic shipment of materials, including related customs formalities. The position works closely with VSY Operations, Program/Project team members and stakeholders to ensure fulfilment of materials based on production schedules. The role holder will lead a team of approximately 40, including functional professionals and direct labour staff based at VSY and offsite warehouse(s) as well as functional direction to staff at VSL and VDC Shipyards and reports to the Senior Director, Corporate Supply Chain Management (C-SCM).
This position holder will drive initiatives and continuous improvement projects targeted at achieving or exceeding operational metrics, driving towards standard methodologies and ways of working across all Seaspan shipyards.
The Director, Warehousing and Logistics will be responsible for aligning strategies with Planning & Production Control, Operations, Procurement, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, representatives of Tier 1 Subcontractors and customs & freight service providers to ensure all materials requirements in support of new construction and repair and overhaul shipyards are fulfilled.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2275 Douglas Road, Burnaby, B.C. V5C 5A9.
What you’ll do
- Develops, leads, and implements functional Shipyard wide warehousing, stores, materials management and logistics, freight and customs strategies, incorporating VSY and Subcontractor requirements where required.
- Develops, designs, and implements a warehousing and logistics business model to support changing organizational requirements.
- Establishes policies and procedures for the safe and secure material management and issuing of a very broad range of materials and equipment in support of new vessel construction and ship repair and overhaul businesses.
- Develops, leads and implements C-SCM Warehouse and Logistics roadmap of initiatives, ensuring priority, status and resourcing requirements are met and communicated effectively.
- Leads the implementation and utilization of inventory levels, identify key items and rationalize inventory items, resolving optimal inventory levels.
- Serves as the primary facilities’ point of contact with the landlord for leased offsite new construction warehouse(s) and with sub-tenant representatives for subleases.
- Ensures the physical layout of warehouses and stores are optimized with high density storage capacity and efficient workflow applying Lean Manufacturing methodologies.
- Ensures equipment storage is in accordance with manufacturer recommended preservation and care guidelines.
- Establishes KPIs and reporting Metrics for department performance monitoring.
- Acts as a business partner, collaborates with internal stakeholders for planning/forecasting and establishing and maintaining appropriate controls to minimize the cost of inventory while improving material availability.
- Establishes inventory management and tracking processes for materials (e.g., pipe spools) held at supplier warehouses and subsequent shipment directly to the shipyard in accordance with production schedules.
- Resolves material handling equipment (MHE) requirements, coordinate with Procurement and the shipyard for the acquisition of MHE and ensure ongoing maintenance of the equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Works in collaboration with Seaspan’s Safety Manager; develops, implements and maintains a meticulous warehouse workplace safety program and culture.
- Leads the conduct of formal audits of new construction and repair inventories, reports results and takes actions to address systemic and other issues that may lead to loss of inventory.
- Manages activities of staff including goal setting, performance evaluations, development plans, succession planning, compensation and time management.
- Develops and present annual budgets and monthly forecasts, including periodic reporting of key variances and accountability for budget accuracy. Responsible for achieving department KPI metrics.
- Owns and manages the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all Shipyards Warehousing and Logistics, supervising SOP compliance through regular reviews.
- Oversees and utilizes effective inventory control systems including MRP/ERP and coordinated barcode technology to ensure full traceability of materials and equipment in effective and efficient warehouse operations, whilst continuing to develop the processes and tools required.
What you’ll bring
- Minimum 10 years of management level warehousing and logistics experience, preferably in a manufacturing and/or heavy engineering repair-based environment.
- Business, Supply Chain, Logistics or Engineering degree preferred.
- Professional certification or designation such as the BCIT Materials Management certificate, The Logistics Institute (P. Log.), American Purchasing Society or The Association for Operations Management (APICS) CPIM program is desirable.
- Membership in P.Log, APICS-CPIM, Canadian Institute for Procurement and Materiel Management (CIPMM) or Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) is an asset.
- Proven ability to develop an implement Warehousing and Logistics strategies aligned to the needs of the business.
- Consistent record to manage challenges while continuing to meet deadlines and achieve goals.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize work and to problem solve in an inclusive manner with internal colleagues and external parties.
- Extensive knowledge and background in the formation of Warehousing, Materials Management and Freight & Customs operations that support a manufacturing and repair and overhaul environment.
- Experience with planning warehouse layouts which improve storage capacity and include efficient pick patterns coupled with the expected inbound & outbound flow of materials and equipment.
- Able to lead and implement change in a warehousing and logistics environment.
- Able to build dedication to ideas, plans, and courses of action across the organization.
- Strong leadership and highly effective communication skills.
- Ability to provide leadership to direct report unionized and non-unionized staff including training, professional development and discipline.
- Knowledge of best practices in supply chain management, material management, inventory control, distribution and logistics.
- Solid understanding of ISO standards, as applicable to supply chain management, material management, inventory control, distribution, and logistics.
- Experience with Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or other process improvement method.
- Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of material handling equipment (MHE) that is appropriate for various purposes in warehousing operations.
- Understanding of Incoterms rules and various modes of transport available for global supply of materials and equipment coupled with knowledge of and practice in the application of Controlled Goods and International Traffic in Arms (ITAR) Regulations.
- Demonstration of exemplary business ethics, values, integrity and honesty in all situations.

The estimated salary for this position is $153,000-$187,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
