LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services is seeking a responsible and patient-oriented individual to join our team in Thunder Bay, ON in a dual role with a primary role as a Lab Patient Technician and secondary role as a Mobile Lab Patient Technician.

Dual Role – Primary designation Lab Patient Technician, secondary designation Medical Lab Assistant
Part Time role, can be scheduled shifts in Patient Service Centre or Specimen Management, expectation of coverage for sick calls/vacation
PSC Shifts are Monday-Friday 7am-530pm, 4-8 hours in length
Specimen Management shifts are Monday-Friday 8am-630pm, 4-8 hours in length

In the Lab Patient Technician role, you will:

• Greet and request required information from patients, explain the specimen collection process, and ensure patients have followed necessary test protocol prior to specimen collection.
• Perform phlebotomies, connect/disconnect Holter monitors, and perform ECG tracings.
• Perform special test collections, such as medical/legal drug screens, paternity tests, and clinical trials, and complete related documentation.
• Maintain client relationships, including responding to inquiries and following up on requests.
• Complete data entry of required patient demographics, requisition information, and other information related to processing test results.
• Prepare specimens for transportation and testing.

The right person for this role will be focused on great customer/patient service and be able to relate to patients and clients even in stressful situations. Some key qualities include empathy, flexibility, adaptability to change, and problem-solving skills. Other requirements include

• Graduate of an approved Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
• Phlebotomy experience.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Good computer skills with a minimum typing speed of 40 wpm.
• Ability to maintain the strictest standards of patient privacy and confidentiality.

As a Medical Lab Assistant, you will play a key role in the testing and diagnostic process for a wide range of patients.

In this role you will:

• Unpack and sort a wide variety of incoming specimens received from sources including physicians, clinics, hospitals, and mobile LifeLabs technicians.
• Confirm the accuracy of all patient information on requisitions and specimen samples, resolve any problems or inaccuracies prior to testing, and perform required data entry.
• Prepare, sort & separate specimens for technical analysis.
• Respond to client inquiries & work in cooperation with the logistics department
• Train and orient new team members.
• Perform weekly and monthly maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Conduct all work in full compliance with all laboratory safety and security policies and regulations.

The right person for this role is an organized and detail-oriented individual with good problem solving and customer service skills. Some key qualities include flexibility, accountability, and attention to detail.

Other requirements include:

• Successful completion or graduation from a recognized Medical Lab Assistant (MLA) program is an asset.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidate must be detail oriented with the ability to focus, prioritize and multi-task.
• Data entry and computer skills.
• Committed to remaining current with company practices, training, policies & procedures
• Prior experience in laboratory operations or medical terminology an asset.
• Works well in a team environment.
• Ability to communicate with other internal & external departments.
• Ability to maintain the strictest standards of patient privacy and confidentiality.

Hiring Range: 46,700 – 59,500

The hiring range has been established, however, the final salary recommendation will be determined based off the level of experience, education requirement, external market conditions and internal equity.
