Please note this is a short-term contract position from January to August 2021. (Possible extension through Fall 2021)
A unique opportunity for an education consultant with Ontario secondary-school experience to work with a leading opera/ballet company.
The Education Consultant (EC) will work closely with Opera Atelier’s Education & Outreach Coordinator to plan, develop, roll-out and evaluate a comprehensive video-based education program for Ontario students grades 7-12. This shift will allow the company to pivot its current program from in-person to virtual learning.
Content will be modelled closely on Opera Atelier’s established in-person “Making of an Opera” program (MOAO), with particular focus on the 2020-2021 season. This long-standing workshop series has introduced students to the behind-the-scenes work in creating an opera production. It has always been offered free of charge to middle and high schools, with an emphasis on inviting underserved and Toronto Neighbourhood Improvement Area schools.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with OA’s Education & Outreach Coordinator, the Contractor will undertake the following duties. Some duties are open to negotiation, with the possibility of contracting additional help.
Please note that the Contractor will not be responsible for budgeting, technical coordination, human resources, or videography.
Program Development & Writing Duties:
- Make recommendations for OA’s existing 9 workshops
- Create a content plan for live interactive ‘Zoom Masterclass’ visits featuring our artists
- Write support materials for teachers and students
- Write parental permission forms
- Create an effective roll-out schedule (between April & June 2021)
- Design a comprehensive evaluation plan, with Trillium grant goals in mind
- Create surveys for teachers & students
- Write a final report based on metrics & participant feedback
- Other documents as required
Research Duties:
- Assess current teacher wants & needs, limitations & obligations
- Assess current Board requirements for third-party education programs
- Identify potential issues with cultural sensitivities, student privacy, accessibility and inclusivity
- Identify appropriate candidate schools based on need, Toronto NIA status (or GTA equivalent), and prior program involvement or interest
Implementation & Evaluation Duties:
- Approach schools/teachers to offer the digital MOAO program this Spring
- Book and schedule participating schools (access to videos, live masterclasses)
- Liaise with teachers throughout the booking process
- Distribute, collect and compile evaluation survey responses
Other duties as required
Requirements:
- Experience in running education programs for Ontario middle and secondary school students
- A performing arts background would be an asset
- Immediate availability would be an asset
- Strong initiative and self-motivation with excellent project management skills
- Detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to multitask
- Ability to stay on timeline and in budget
- Effective communication skills
- Very strong people skills, particularly working with teachers and school administrators
- Calm and collected demeanour even in high pressure situations
- Proven diplomacy when working with multiple stakeholders
- Competency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office programs
- Familiarity with synchronous learning platforms (Zoom, Google Classroom)
Additional Info: Contract Compensation: $10,000.00 (+HST if registered) for the entire contract, with a negotiable payment schedule. As a contract position, the Contractor is responsible for the remittance of any applicable taxes.
The Contractor will work independently and remotely for most of the project, meeting with OA’s Education & Outreach Coordinator via regular video conferencing.
All work will be undertaken within OA’s COVID safety protocols, and following all federal, provincial and municipal health & safety guidelines.
This contract begins immediately, and all activities must be completed by August 30, 2021. This new position is supported by funding from the Trillium Foundation, and all work must be done within the grant’s goals and framework.
The project timeline* is as follows:
Jan/early Feb: create content plans, conduct research, approach teachers about participation
Feb/March: content creation (videos, written materials), booking schools
April/May/June: roll out the program to schools, including collecting feedback
July: evaluate metrics & feedback, and complete final report
August 30: all activities must be completed
*Possible that timeline may shift slightly if current stay-at-home order is extended.
Expected salary: $25 – 40 per hour
