About Us
The Burns Bog Conservation Society is a member-driven charity, founded in 1988 to save Burns Bog from development, and to protect and sustain Burns Bog and other peatlands for future generations.

We offer education programs, organize community events, and a system of boardwalks in the Delta Nature Reserve.

What We Do
Educate people on the importance of Burns Bog, a globally unique ecosystem due to its chemistry, form, flora, fauna and size as one of the world’s largest undeveloped ecosystems in an urban area.

Provide opportunities for people to interact with this natural environment through interpretive tours, educational materials, community events, and maintaining the boardwalks to provide access for all members of our broader community.

Protect Burns Bog by advocating for ecologically responsible governance of Burns Bog and global peatlands at the local, provincial and federal levels of Canadian government, and by working with peatland organizations and scientists worldwide.

Education & Research Assistant Duties Include:

  • Educate K-12 students about Burns Bog through field trips, in-class workshops, and other teaching opportunities
  • Research & keep up to date on issues related to Burns Bog, the Delta Nature Reserve, and global peatlands
  • Assist in updating Education Program content and developing new teacher resources based on current knowledge of Burns Bog and global peatlands, and best practices in outdoor education
  • Attend community outreach events to recruit new volunteers and/or inform the public about Burns Bog
  • Write articles & social media content, and speak publicly about Society programs, Burns Bog, and/or other related topics
  • Participate in fundraising initiatives including grant applications, special events, and sponsorships

Your Skills:

  • Fluency in French
  • Organized, good time management skills and able to meet deadlines
  • Working knowledge of current BC K-12 curriculum and experience in lesson planning
  • Experience and enthusiasm teaching and/or working with children
  • Strong writing and communication skills with relevant experience
  • Team player and ability to multitask

To be elligible you must…

  • Have a degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or a related field
  • Be thirty years old or younger, and legally able to work in Canada
  • Be currently registered for the ECO Canada EYC internship program
  • Have a valid BC driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle
  • Be willing to obtain a criminal record check

Time Commitment:

  • 37.5 hours/week for 12 months (subject to funding)
  • Regular office hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 8:30 – 5:00. Some evening and weekend work required.
  • Preferred start date: September 12, 2017

Compensation:

$16.00/hour plus mileage when appropriate.
