Summary
This position reports to the Electrical Supervisor.
The Portage facility is one of five plants (Caldwell, ID; Grand Forks, ND; Moses Lake, WA; and Othello, WA) within the processed potatoes division of the Food Group Division of the J.R. Simplot Company that produces food service French fries, granulated dehydrated mashed potatoes, shredded and southern style hash browns and specialty products.
The individual in this position must possess thorough working knowledge of electrical, instrumentation, automation systems, high speed vision defect removal equipment, information systems, and productivity software. The individual must also be able to perform electrical panel troubleshooting, instrument installations, and repair tasks. The knowledge of this position will be equipment specific focusing more on defect removal equipment and assist in avoiding unnecessary service calls to manufacturer and outside contractors.
The individual in this position must establish and maintain open communications and productive work relationships with Maintenance Supervisors, Shift Managers, Production employees and Maintenance co-workers.
The individual in this position will be required to fully understand the purpose and operation of the areas in which they are working and is required to have the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates it. It is imperative the individual conducts themselves in a manner that ensures alertness and constant awareness of the safe operation of equipment and its surroundings.
The area of work includes both inside the facility and outside, depending on work requirements. Overtime requirements in this position are common and may be required to meet operational goals.
Key Responsibilities
Documents, monitors, maintains, and assists with reporting of shift events, logging Predictive Maintenance data and assists with work planning utilizing information systems and productivity softwar
Identifies and performs preventative/predictive maintenance on equipment throughout the facility:
Maintains all shop inventories, tools and shop equipment.
Creates, performs and completes work orders in the system as assigned or as needed, prepares kitting when necessary.
Coordinates or schedules additional work as needed.
Identifies parts needed for work to be done, conducts inventory searches and locates parts.
Maintains, troubleshoots and calibrates instrumentation: Uses PLC as a troubleshooting tool. Test electrical systems or circuits in electrical cabinets.
Troubleshoots and makes minor and major repairs of equipment, including high speed vision defect removal equipment and automation systems, in order to prevent or minimize equipment and machine downtime, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
Maintains Company standards for quality, food safety, sanitation and GMPs: Works within safety rules and regulations in actively avoiding injury to self and others. Ensures proper food safety sanitation and cleaning procedures of all processing equipment and tools.
May assist with training other plant personnel.
Ensures attendance and participation in training activities appropriate to the position and incorporates acquired skills and knowledge.
Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies.
Ensures that all work related activities within the facility are accomplished through methods which promote safety to employees and which minimize potential impact to the community and environment in which we live.
Ensures self-compliance with Company policies and procedures.
Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a participative management style consistent with operational goals.
Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the Company.
Ensures that additional accountabilities as may be required by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet operational Divisional standards.
Typical Education
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Relevant Experience
1. Must have current certification as Electrical Technician or Instrumentation Technician.
2. Knowledge in assembling, evaluating, troubleshooting and maintaining electrical or electronic wiring, instruments, equipment’s etc.
3. Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers and Control Systems, DeltaV, Allen Bradley, Foundation Field Bus, ASi Bus, Device-Net will be an asset.
4. Must have experience operating hand tools, soldering, calibrating and fault testing equipment’s.
5. Must possess well-developed computer skills.
6. Must be able to identify and distinguish colors.
7. Must supply own hand tools of the trade.
8. Must be able to read and understand electrical and electronic circuit blueprints, PID’s, schematics, and technical manuals.
9. Must be able to communicate verbally in a professional manner.
10. Must have the ability to work in cold, wet, hot, and slippery environments for long periods of time.
11. Must have the ability to move up and down stairs and ladders and work in confined areas.
12. Able to operate a lift truck and aerial lift equipment once trained and certified, and must meet the standards on fall protection restraints.

- Must have a working knowledge of basic electrical safety practices.
- Must have an understanding of DC voltage systems (0 to 240V) and AC voltage systems (24 to 480).
- Must have a working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
- Must be able to use voltage testers, meggers, amp probes, and other electrical test equipment.
- Demonstrate the ability to do basic math, and the ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, be able to read a tape measure, and measure with calipers.
- Must be able to read, write and communicate in English in a manner to successfully perform job duties.
- Must have computer skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in extreme environments: hot, cold, wet, and slick floors.
- Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, catwalks, and maneuver in close quarters.
- Must be able to use appropriate personal protective equipment, such as respirators, SCBA, and safety harness as appropriate for given tasks.
- Must have complete understanding and safe operation of hand, power, and shop tools.
- Must be able to read and understand basic electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Must furnish own hand tools.
