Course Overview:

The General English Stream helps students develop English language skills for personal or professional reasons. Morning classes focus strongly on developing fluency in speaking and listening as well as grammar, reading, and writing.

Students entering this level can communicate with some confidence in social conversations, and in less common situations. They can communicate facts and ideas in detail and can use a variety of structures. Grammar and pronunciation errors still occur and may sometimes impede communication. Students at this level are reasonably fluent and have good listening comprehension but may still require repetition. In reading, Level 5 students can identify main ideas, key words, and important details. In writing, they can convey information from a table or graph in a coherent paragraph and can produce a two or three paragraph composition on a familiar topic.

As an instructor you will develop students’ ability to speak fluently, and will learn to communicate effectively in various contexts. Students will increase their vocabulary and expand it in areas beyond everyday contexts. They will learn appropriate idioms for use in a variety of situations. At this level, students will develop reading and writing skills for use in longer passages and will learn to write paragraph sequences.

Responsibilities:

  • Course Preparation and Outline in accordance with Program requirements
  • Lesson / Lecture preparation
  • Attendance Management
  • Teaching
  • Tracking progress of students studying through different modes both in class and through alternate delivery
  • Student Contact
  • Participation in teacher-student events, activities, staff meetings and graduation ceremony
  • Preparation and invigilation of examinations
  • Marking and grading
  • Maintenance of class Nexus pages
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree required
  • TESL or CELTA required
  • Minimum of 800 hours of experience in the following:
  • Teaching high intermediate listening strategies
  • Teaching high intermediate pronunciation
  • Teaching writing for communication
  • Teaching high intermediate conversational functions and strategies
  • Teaching multi-level classes with a range of interests, abilities and objectives, course content changes each term
  • Minimum of 1600 hours of experience in the following:
  • Teaching communicative grammar at high intermediate level
  • Teaching high intermediate vocabulary acquisition
  • Extensive familiarity with materials available for supplementation (online resources, videos, TV shows, movies, textbooks)
  • Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
  • Experience incorporating technology in teaching
  • Ability to design and balance course content through a combination of student interest and key topics
  • Ability to engage students whether they are in class or through alternate delivery
  • Familiarity with different English accents
  • Ability to foster confidence and independent learning in learners
  • Ability to adapt tasks and lessons to meet the diverse goals of the students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
  • Varied teaching experience is considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
  • Preferred experience teaching students with varied language goals (post-secondary, workplace, general communication)
  • Knowledge of a language additional to English considered an asset
