Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centred clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
Under the general supervision of the Charge or delegate, the General Duty Cytogenetic Technologist is responsible for clinical analysis and reporting on patient samples according to established protocols in the Cytogenetics lab. The General Duty Cytogenetic Technologist is also responsible for assisting in Cytogenetics lab projects such as SOPs, chemical inventories, etc.
If the incumbent is a graduate of a Genetics Technology program or is otherwise qualified to work in the Molecular lab then the Genomics Discipline Team and Shared Health Diagnostic Services Operations will determine if a rotation into the Molecular lab is needed and the nature and extent of that rotation. While in the Molecular lab the incumbent is responsible for clinical analysis and reporting on patient samples according to established protocols in the Molecular lab. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting in Molecular lab projects such as SOPs, chemical inventories, etc.
The incumbent will maintain a safe environment in accordance with professional and provincial guidelines and ensure compliance with quality assurance programs and maintain standards put forth by Accreditation. Functions are conducted in accordance with the Mission and Values of Shared Health, current policies, procedures and applicable legislation.
Experience
- Previous related experience preferred
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Graduate of an approved Genetics Technology program or
- Graduate of an approved Cytogenetics laboratory training program or
- A Bachelor of Science or equivalent program that includes lecture courses and laboratory courses in cytogenetics with work experience involving human related testing. Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters or post-graduate work directly related to cytogenetics. Successful completion of the CSMLS Prior Learning Assessment process is a requirement for this qualification.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Current licensing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) required
- Current registration with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) preferred
Qualifications and Skills
- Windows computer environment required
- Microsoft Office programs preferred
- Follow oral and written instructions precisely with attention to detail
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills required in English
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member
- Proficient analytical skills
