Job description: Our client is a Canadian-owned business that is a leader in the heavy equipment and truck industry. They are looking for a full-time General Manager to join their team in Chatham, Ontario.

The role of the General Manager is to work collaboratively with the functional support leaders through operations management, sales, and customer service. They must be able to deliver consistent and profitable growth in revenues and margins at the locations within their scope. The General Manager identifies objectives, strategies, and action plans to improve short and long-term, along with sales and earnings, while delivering a quality product on time. This role involves building superior leadership teams and efficient operations at each location as well as collaborating with other leaders to support initiatives across the company.

Some of your key responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Creating and implementing the most realistic sales and operations goals for facilities under their scope
  • Building a performance-focused culture holding each supervisor or “area supervisor” accountable for results
  • Setting and achieving financial targets and associated KPI’s with the support of finance, sales, engineering, and other operations leaders
  • Creating and maintaining a safety-first environment that presents a zero-harm mentality at locations
  • Working to continuously improve plant efficiency, embracing and leading change
  • Communicating regularly and effectively at all levels within the organization
  • Working with finance and sales teams to accurately forecast monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue streams
  • Developing annual budget and forecasts as required
  • Meeting regularly with finance to align performance and strategy and keep on track
  • Managing results through business planning and execution, analysis of financial results and development of related improvement initiatives in addition to commercial assessment and support of requests for capital input
  • Responding to financial gaps such as A/R, cash flow, A/P, etc. through the guidance of finance
  • Interpreting and speaking to reports and metrics related to operational performance with the guidance of finance
  • Building and retaining a high-performance team of employees as a respected employer within the industry through recruitment and development
  • Creating a leadership team and developing succession plans to effectively manage day to day operations
  • Setting goals with leadership team and holding accountable to results through ongoing coaching and mentoring
  • Cascading information from the senior leadership level to direct reports and team as needed to keep employees well informed
  • Working with Human Resources to resolve health and safety issues and foster a strong safety culture
  • Ensuring the company is represented in the community, supporting local causes
  • Driving employee engagement initiatives in collaboration with Human Resources and responding to employee feedback
  • Providing daily motivation, guidance, coaching, and leadership support to direct reports
  • Effectively managing performance through formal and informal assessments and driving individual performance. Completing annual performance reviews and ensuring all employees receive a review
  • The GM is responsible for all “local” sales related activities from sales rep management to operationalizing orders
  • The GM manages and owns shortfalls in quoting, order book, production (parts & service) – identifying problems in advance, mobilizing the sales team and is accountable to provide solutions, opportunities from their list of development opportunities to offer to address the shortfall
  • Ensuring sales are only to customers with approved credit with the company, establishing sales to operations processes making sure they are adhered to
  • Overseeing the quotation process including costing, pricing, and target margins, holding local sales reps accountable to targets and develops remedial sales activities to hit sales targets
  • Monitoring, responding, and staying current to the competitive marketplace, including gaining a deep understanding of new opportunities
  • Ensuring effective communication between sales and operations is fluid and that customers’ needs are properly met with a true customer focus
  • Maintaining active involvement in the industry at events and through the community that the business serves
  • Managing the integrity, safety, growth, and profitability of operations
  • Utilizing shop supervisory team to efficiently deliver products to specifications
  • Ensuring the quality, fit, and finish of the product meets highest level of standard
  • Endorsing and leveraging innovation at the branch and promoting new ways of doing things
  • Working closely with local engineering on optimization of products and processes
  • Working with procurement to ensure appropriate vendor management
  • Encouraging continuous improvement at facilities through regular scheduled meetings with management and employees
  • Proactively identifying and quantifying potential liabilities and immediately implementing corrective actions to mitigate risk to asset base and/or margin
  • Working with procurement to manage vendor relationships, pricing, and supply time
  • Overseeing the implementation and maintenance of core business processes including the ERP system
  • Housekeeping in and around premises and maintenance of equipment and buildings
  • Responding to customer escalations, warranty issues, and other troubleshooting as required
  • Ensuring branch represents overall company values
  • Delivering on customer promises and providing prompt customer responses
  • Maintaining a high level of customer experience satisfaction

Qualifications:

  • 10 years manufacturing management experience
  • Exceptional customer service skills
