Job description: General Practitioner
Okanagan Correctional Centre

Oliver, BC

Locum (Mid May 2021 to May 2022)

As part of the provincial mental health services continuum, BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS) provides a diverse range of specialized, “one-of-a-kind” tertiary mental health and substance use services to adults across the province. These include services located at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital and six regional clinics, the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health & Addiction, and Heartwood Centre for Women. In addition to delivering these clinical services, BCMHSUS provides provincial leadership for system-wide improvement through its work in: health promotion and illness prevention; knowledge exchange; and research and academic teaching.

Correctional Health Services (CHS) is an integral part of British Columbia’s health care system and the newest service of BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services, a part of the Provincial Health Services Authority. We provide health services at all 10 Correctional Centres across British Columbia.

We are seeking a General Practitioner (GP) at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver, BC to help us improve access to primary health care as well as mental health and substance use support for clients in correctional centres. The GP is an important member of the health care team and working alongside other health care experts on a supportive and inter-professional team, you will provide quality care for clients and help them live an active life during their time in custody and as they reintegrate into the community. This new model of health care provides the opportunity for you to grow your expertise as a Primary Care Practitioner in an environment where you’re supported from day one, and where leaders and colleagues across disciplines will have your back.

Be part of a team where you can live and work in your community, positively influence an incarcerated individual’s journey down a new path, and see the difference you can make as you serve the diverse populations of the BC Corrections system.

The interested physicians should be eligible for provisional or full licensure with CPSBC. Certification with the College of Family Physicians, or equivalent, is mandatory. Experience in Correctional Health and/or additional certification or training is an asset.
