GENERAL SERVICES SUPERVISOR

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Applications are invited for the permanent, full-time position of General Services Supervisor for Extendicare Vista Park Lodge. We are a 100-bed home located in St. Vital.

Under the direction of the Administrator, the General Service Supervisor ensures the provision of attractive and nutritious meals which meet the therapeutic requirements of residents and ensures the Dietary, Housekeeping and Laundry Departments operate in an effective, efficient, and safe manner at all times. The General Services Supervisor is responsible for the planning, organizing and general operations of the Laundry, Housekeeping and Dietary Departments and ensures the provision of a safe, clean, and aesthetic environment for the Home.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides for the nutritional needs of residents by following the Extendicare cyclical menu, special diets and recipes by ensuring the efficient use of staff and the maintenance of adequate supplies. Recommends changes in menus to the Regional Dietary Consultant which reflect local tastes and cultural variations.
  • Provides for the environmental needs of residents through provision of organized housekeeping and laundry services.
  • Establishes and implements annual goals and objectives for the Dietary, Housekeeping and Laundry departments in accordance with facility goals and objectives.
  • Purchases food, dietary supplies, dishes, cutlery, housekeeping and laundry supplies, in accordance with budget and purchasing guidelines so as to control cost, maintain adequate inventories and ensure proper quality of services to residents.
  • Schedules cleaning activities to ensure all areas of the building are regularly cleaned. Co-ordinates these activities with Maintenance Department and other departmental supervisors as necessary.
  • Ensures proper storage procedures are followed, including food supplies and chemicals.
  • In accordance with budget provisions, orders needed equipment and utensils for Housekeeping, Laundry and Dietary Departments.
  • Monitors use and maintenance of supplies and equipment in the Dietary, Laundry and Housekeeping Departments.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary reports and records.
  • Plans, directs and supervises the Dietary, Laundry and Housekeeping staff so as to ensure that standards and procedures in Extendicare’s Food Services Manual and Housekeeping/Laundry Manual are met. Evaluates the quality of food production and preparation procedures as well as the work performance of the departments.
  • Monitors service to residents in the dining room to ensure a courteous and efficient approach.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules and evaluates Dietary, Laundry and Housekeeping staff. Recommends and initiates corrective discipline subject to discussion with Administrator and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff and ongoing instruction and supervision of all Dietary, Laundry and Housekeeping staff. Promotes ongoing staff education.
  • Visits residents regularly and communicates with families and outside agencies as necessary.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the written policies and procedures of Extendicare, the facility, and the Dietary and Housekeeping/Laundry Departments.
  • Participates in the evaluation of care and/or services provided by the Dietary and Housekeeping/Laundry Departments by developing, implementing and evaluating activities under the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner and maintains work area in a clean and safe condition.
  • Follows manufacturers’ instructions in the operation and use of all equipment and chemicals.
  • Alert to potential health and safety hazards and takes appropriate action. Reports unsafe and hazardous working conditions and any equipment malfunctions to Maintenance or the Administration Department.
  • Knowledgeable of facility procedures for fire and environmental safety.
  • Performs duties in accordance with prescribed sanitation and infection control procedures.
  • Respects residents’ rights to dignity and privacy and performs duties in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Adheres to “Standards of Employee Conduct”, “Commitment to Residents” and “Extendicare Quality Care Standards”.
  • Works closely and cooperates with other staff and residents. Maintains good working relationships with other departments.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary care conferences, committees, meetings, as required.
  • Responsible for the development and upgrading of his/her knowledge and skills. Attends in-service sessions and conferences as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Mentally and physically able to perform duties as outlined.
  • Certificate in food service supervision is required. Previous experience in institutional food preparation essential. Experience with therapeutic diets and/or supervision preferred. Possesses sufficient knowledge and training in Housekeeping/Laundry methodology, equipment, and related chemicals, to satisfactorily perform the responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to plan, supervise, direct, and evaluate the work of others.
  • Demonstrates concern and interest in providing quality care and service for residents and a safe and attractive environment for staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read and write English as well as to understand verbal and written instructions in English.

Mentally and physically able to perform duties as outlined.

Certificate in food service supervision is required. Previous experience in institutional food preparation essential. Experience with therapeutic diets and/or supervision preferred. Possesses sufficient knowledge and training in Housekeeping/Laundry methodology, equipment, and related chemicals, to satisfactorily perform the responsibilities of the position.

Ability to plan, supervise, direct, and evaluate the work of others.

Demonstrates concern and interest in providing quality care and service for residents and a safe and attractive environment for staff.
