Job Summary
Reporting to the Geoscience Managers and the Principal Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Lead will be responsible for providing geotechnical leadership and supervision of a large and complex prefeasibility-level study. The successful candidate will contribute as a senior member of the field team. Involved with planning, designing, and managing geotechnical studies, while upholding rigorous safety standards. The position is in support of the 2024 geotechnical field program at the Galore Creek Project, a world-class porphyry copper-gold deposit.
Overview
This position is based out of the Galore Creek project site, a remote fly-in camp located in northwestern British Columbia. GCMC will provide travel to and from the project site. This role is expected to be working on-site on a rotational basis of 14 days in, 14 days out from July until September, with office-based work both before and after the field season. The successful candidate would have a start date in May 2024.

Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader; lead by example and foster a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values of health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners (Teck and Newmont).
- Actively seek opportunities to recognize health and safety hazards, resolve safety issues and work to mitigate associated risks in the workplace.
- Contribute as a senior member of the field team, providing technical leadership and on-site technical supervision, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a multi-faceted technical program.
- The Geotechnical Lead will be the field-level representative for engineering studies, and the primary liaison between field operations and internal and external engineers during their field rotations.
- Supervise on-the-ground aspects of the geotechnical drill program and related geotechnical studies including contractor technical management, safety leadership, site logistics, core logging, technical surveys, and reporting.
- Complete timely and consistent QAQC analyses and reports for field data collection. Assist and take ownership of geotechnical aspects of the field program including oriented split tube (triple tube) logging of diamond drill core, soil logging of sonic drill core, hydrogeologic testing and instrumentation installation, penetration testing, acoustic televiewer surveys, and test pit excavation/logging.
- Compile and prepare progress reports and technical reports as required, concisely summarizing project results for multiple stakeholders (management, value assurance, external consultants).
- Guide, train, and mentor junior members of the technical and geoscience teams.

Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering or related Geoscience discipline from an accredited curriculum.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience related to geotechnical field programs. Experience should include diamond and sonic drill core, hydrogeologic testing and instrumentation installation, geophysics, and machine excavated test pit programs.
- Registered, or eligible for professional registration with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).
- Previous experience working with helicopters is an asset.
- Previous experience working with Acoustic televiewers (AQI40) and Mt. Sopris winches is an asset.
- Strong computer skills, with experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and a GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS, etc).
- Familiarity with specialized software for field level data collection is an asset, including Leapfrog, MX deposit, acQuire, and data management software.
- Strong analytical skills and knowledge of data analysis techniques; familiarity with QA/QC procedures is an asset.
- Experience working with surficial geophysics (seismic reflection/electrical resistivity tomography data) is an asset.
- Knowledge of geotechnical downhole stress testing is an asset.
- Experience working in a diverse and multicultural environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; the ability to write clear and concise reports is particularly important, as well as the ability to present technical information to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to liaise with contractors and all people on site in a respectful and professional manner.
- Ability to safely and comfortably lift 25 kg.
- Strong leadership, management and team building skills; ability to motivate and inspire others, support employees, and ensure a safe, healthy, inclusive workforce. Enthusiasm to lead diverse multidisciplinary teams in delivering on a broad range of project objectives in a remote camp setting.
- High degree of motivation, strategic planning, and self-starting capabilities. Proven ability to prioritize, work under pressure with minimal guidance and meet tight deadlines.

- Valid Class 5 Driver’s license; familiarity driving pickup trucks on remote/rural roads, and active mining or construction sites is an asset.
Pay Range (Annual Salary): $100,000 – $125,000
