Job description: Longview Farms is a progressive grower and shipper of a wide variety of Certified Organic fruit and vegetable crops as well as conventional fresh-cut daffodils, daffodil bulbs, pumpkins, hay and grain. We are the largest Certified Organic farm on Vancouver Island and our produce, flowers and bulbs can be found in several local retail stores throughout Vancouver Island and the mainland. Our farm is in the municipality of Central Saanich on Southern Vancouver Island which is on the West Coast of British Columbia. This area hosts some of the most productive farmland in Canada.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting into the Head Grower, the successful candidate will bring a broad expertise in outdoor farming field environments. The Head Grower’s Assistant primary role is to assist the Head Grower in Daily management of the farm crew and fields at our organic farm located in Central Saanich, B.C.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under direction of the Head Grower, daily monitoring of fields and crops to time implementation of an Integrative pest and nutrient management program that maximizes yields while building up farm diversity and sustainability.
- Helping the Head Grower in managing the farm workers day to day field activities; including tracking employee time utilizing the farm time tracking software and transitioning crew members between tasks throughout the day.
- Reviewing labor requirements and, in coordination with the Head Grower and Greenhouse Lead, managing the day to day workforce to ensure efficient planning and scheduling of warehouse and field crews.
- Providing training for field workers in all matters related to crop production with an emphasis on the teaching of new, tested industry ideas and personal expertise and experiences.
- Fostering a positive and healthy work environment through continuous mentoring of safety programs and improved working relationships with all employees.
- Working with the Head Grower and the Tractor Operator to help with tractor work as needed, including input spraying, cultivating, planting and other mechanical tasks in the fields.
- Working with grower to plan crop rotation and varieties.
- Maintaining inventory checklists as well as input logs for all fields.
- Offering production suggestions and Ideas and taking part in regular auditing and improvement of farm standard operating procedures.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 3+ years on farm work experience in a similar position.
- Experience in organic crop management of flowers, annual vegetables, and perennial fruit.
- Occupational First Aid Certification.
- Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract.
- Experience with Organic Farming and Food Safety Certifications.
- Forklift experience is an asset.
- A diploma or degree in Horticulture or agriculture is an asset.
- Pesticide Applicator’s license is an Asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in Spanish is considered an asset.
- MS office skills; including, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Excellent management skills: with the ability to organize and direct large teams, exercise good judgment in a fast-paced environment, and inspire and lead people.
- Able to clearly communicate instruction, monitor, follow up, and correct as required.
- Able to walk, stand, kneel, lift 50 lbs, and perform other physical duties for long periods and long hours in inclement weather conditions.
- Attention to detail with an ability to meet time sensitive deadlines effectively.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and problem solve effectively.
- Ability to work with multiple individuals at varying levels in the organization and with varying levels of experience.
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as seasonally required by the farm.
