The Health Care Aide (HCA) provides patient care services as an unregulated worker under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The HCA participates in the delivery of quality individualized, client-centered care, based on assessed unmet needs of the patient/resident. Responsibilities include providing direct care to assist in the activities of daily living, comfort and safety of the patient/resident and providing indirect services to support the overall provision of care in their assigned area. This position requires frequent physical demands include standing, walking, bending, lifting and hand movements, ability to stand for long periods, and be capable of lifting 25-50 pounds on a regular basis. May be required to work a variety of shifts and shift patterns. The HCA must demonstrate effective communication skills by using good listening, respectful tone of voice, respectful body language, and by communicating information both verbally and in writing with patient/clients, families, visitors and team members. The incumbent must have the ability to work independently or as a member of an interdisciplinary team and to request and accept direction as required. Demonstrate strong task specific organizational skills. Strong observation skills. An ability to provide behavioral, emotional and physical support to patients/client conveying respect and dignity for the patients/client. Please note, this facility provides Long Term Care (LTC) or Designated Supportive Living (DSL) services and by Order of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, many AHS employees are restricted to work only at a single LTC/DSL site for the remainder of the pandemic. Speak to the hiring manager who will confirm if, as the successful candidate in this position, you will be restricted to work at only one LTC/DLS site in Alberta.

Description:

As a Health Care Aide (HCA) – Nursing Attendant, you are responsible for providing personal assistance, supporting activities of daily living and providing comfort and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support. You will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered without enrolment in the Directory. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification. Additional Required Qualifications:

Ability to work as a member of a team and to request and accept direction. Effective interpersonal and communication skills with patients/residents, families, visitors and team members. Well-developed time managements skills. Ability to handle the physical demands of the position. Must be able to communicate in verbal and written English. 1 year experience as a Health Care Aide. Completed and current AHS Annual Competencies – including current ‘It’s your Move’ course.
