SUMMARY OF POSITION

The HR Generalist is responsible for supporting the entire employee life cycle for Canadian-based employees, including payroll, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, and training. This position advises on compliance, short and long-term business needs, and how applicable strategies may impact involved parties. Maintains an applied knowledge of national, multi-province, and local employment law and regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for managing the entire payroll process using ADP for all Canadian-based employees, currently approximately 30 people with the potential to grow to approximately 70 within the next year.
  • Verifies the accuracy of all payroll entries including deductions, earnings and changes, review and reconcile payroll date and resolve any discrepancies as necessary.
  • Ensure payroll wage garnishments are processed timely and accurately.
  • Audit timesheets accurately to ensure wages and benefits are properly distributed.
  • Manage all benefit related items including auditing, enrolling, assisting with processing claims, keeping in contact with all benefit vendors.
  • Conduct new hire orientation for employees.
  • Process termination paperwork.
  • Maintains employee files.
  • Coaches and mentors managers and employees.
  • Manages and resolves employee relations activities, including investigations, discipline, and termination.
  • Partners with leadership to execute performance reviews.
  • Delivers regulatory training to managers and employees, as applicable.
  • Participates in weekly meetings with management, providing HR guidance when appropriate.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance with legal requirements pertinent to the day-to-day management of employees; collaborates with legal counsel when necessary.
  • Responsible for HR policies and procedures, including writing, rollout, and maintenance. Includes responsibility for handbook updates and multi-province addendums, as applicable.
  • Assists with maintenance and execution of the safety program, including managing worker’s compensation claims and regulatory logs, as applicable.
  • Manages employee leave of absences.
  • Partners with the U.S.-based HR team on development and execution of HR programs and protocols.
  • Provides policy guidance and interpretation to the assigned location leadership teams.
  • May serve on cross-functional teams and/or committees to improve and/or streamline plant operations.
  • Assists COO and General Managers with labor analyses reports, as requested.
  • Assists site management with community relations, as needed.
  • Will be required to regularly visit dedicated facilities to provide the above mentioned support to all employees and management. Flexible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel is minimal and at the HR Generalist’s discretion or as needed due to sensitive HR items that may benefit from an in-person meeting.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Team-player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple employee relations, leadership priorities, and projects at a time, while maintaining sharp attention to detail.
  • Flexibility/Adaptability -Adapts easily to changes in work priorities and environment and is willing to assume additional responsibility and learn new procedures. Demonstrates effective organizational, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Goal-oriented, evidence-based decision-maker.
  • Excellent computer skills with applied knowledge of Google Suite products.
  • Thorough knowledge of HR best practices, laws, and methodologies.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources management, business administration or related field required with a minimum of 3+ years of human resources experience, relevant to payroll, benefits, and employee relations.
  • May consider relevant human resources experience in lieu of education.
  • Payroll system implementation and extensive experience with ADP is highly preferred
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding compensation, benefits, employee issues, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience providing outstanding customer support
  • Significant experience working in multi-provincial payroll is a plus
  • Manufacturing experience, preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • 80% of the time in a professional office setting with some potential travel to facilities and meetings
  • Works in plant environment, including time on the production floor with employees
  • Schedule may demand flexible hours outside of normal business day
