Job description: Position Summary

The laboratory technician is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the School of Information Technology Administration & Security (ITAS), especially in the computer security laboratories. In addition to maintaining the equipment in the laboratories in a timely manner, the incumbent assists faculty members in the delivery of the laboratory component of courses by setting up the equipment/software and environments and answering student questions, ensuring equipment is functional and available, and maintaining a professional atmosphere during scheduled laboratory periods. The incumbent also provides instructions to the part-time student Lab Assistants on the lab procedures and assists other members of the support staff with the setup and maintenance of laboratory equipment used by the School.

The incumbent is required to be familiar with the equipment in the laboratories and ITAS server room and the material being taught in the laboratory sessions.

Maintaining currency and expertise with networking equipment and cybersecurity practices and tools is important for this position.

Responsibilities

Faculty and Student Support

  • Collaborates with faculty in designing, modifying, and determining the functionality of labs.
  • Set up lab environments and prepare virtual machines and environments for labs, projects, and assessments.
  • Answers student questions about the laboratory assignments and other elements of the course topic material, solidifying the concepts presented by the faculty member.
  • Maintains and provides technical information for all activities that take place in the associated laboratories.
  • ·Monitors and tracks the use of open labs and ITAS-loaned equipment.

Equipment/ Facilities

  • Plans, organizes, supervises, and maintains all ITAS equipment and ITAS laboratory facilities.
  • Provides faculty and students with instructions on the proper use and storage of the equipment.
  • Monitors and maintains records of the condition, life cycle, and availability of networking laboratory equipment.
  • Supports the Lab Technologist in maintaining accurate and current ITAS network infrastructure documentation.
  • Maintains, repairs, and modifies ITAS security infrastructure.
  • Ensures adequate supply of replacement equipment is on hand, including monitoring- service contract and/or warranty coverage.
  • Supports ITAS Technologists in maintaining and updating capital equipment inventory and files of associated technical and service documentation.
  • Assists other members of the support staff, including IT Services and ITAS team members, with set up, upgrading, and maintenance of laboratory equipment used by the School.
  • Collaborates with faculty and ITAS Technologists to determine the required ITAS networking laboratory equipment. Arranges for replacement of equipment that cannot be adequately repaired.

Technology Development

  • Investigates and researches the use of the latest technological developments and innovations in the IT security industry.
  • Liaises with manufacturers and/or suppliers to locate and acquire information on these technology trends.

Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum three (3) year Diploma/Degree in Computer Systems Technology; Computer Studies; IT Security; or related field. If in another field, please state how it relates.
  • Valid and current CCNA certification and/or HCNA certification and/or Network+ is preferred

Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year experience performing technical support in a Cisco/data communications environment, including hands-on hardware troubleshooting and repair.
  • IT experience in a post-secondary lab environment is an asset.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to interact with and support a diverse group of stakeholders across Seneca.
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer hardware, peripherals, and software applications.
  • Ability to understand and investigate problems, research and devise solutions, and apply fundamental principles where needed for resolution.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple demands and competing priorities.
