This is a Part-Time Auxiliary-on-call position with various hours throughout the year (May-July 1-3 days/week, August-October 5 days/week, November-April 1 day/week). This position is based in Whitehorse however there may be opportunities in the communities.

The Agriculture Branch is responsible for implementing the Agriculture Policy to promote and develop the production, processing, and marketing of food, fodder, and fibre grown in the Yukon and thus increase Yukon food sovereignty.

As part of the Agriculture Branch team, the Livestock Health Technician’s primary role is to provide meat inspection services in the 3 licensed abattoirs. They are also responsible for providing livestock health technical services for the Agriculture Branch and Animal Health Unit across Yukon, including providing meat inspection services, administering the Veterinary Services Program and supporting livestock health related activities. This position reports to the Agriculture Development Officer (EMR) but their duties include direct functional support for programs delivered in collaboration with the Program veterinarian at the Animal Health Unit (ENV) and these priorities are agreed to by both Departments in the annual work plan.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in science, agriculture, animal sciences or related field
  • Experience in the field of animal health, and/or food processing
  • Experience working in an abattoir, butcher shop or meat processing facility is an asset.
  • Experience working with policies/regulations related to the Meat Inspection and Abattoir Regulations and Food Safety Practices is an asset

Candidates who have training combined with considerable experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above will be equally considered

We are looking for an individual who is self-motivated and dependable and has the ability to handle a fast-paced workload in a physically-demanding and occasionally high-stress environment. This person should have excellent relationship-building skills to work with, provide direction to, and communicate with farmers and abattoir operators; the ability to communicate difficult decisions to livestock owners and abattoir operators; and effective communication skills, both written and oral. The successful candidate will have a good understanding of animal anatomy, animal diseases, food safety and sanitation, strong decision-making skills, the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and be able to use good judgement. This person must be able to understand and interpret policies and regulations related to the Meat Inspection and Abattoir Regulations and Food Safety Practices and have general office administration skills with MS Suite.

  • Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence.

Job Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel within Yukon
  • Willingness to work irregular hours based on operational requirements. (May-July 1-3 days/week, August-October 5 days/week, November-April 1 day/week)
  • Mandatory use of all prescribed personal protective equipment, safety materials and equipment
  • Physically able to perform work that includes standing for extended periods of time, ability to lift weights of up to 25kg, prolonged contact with animal fluids and tissues, exposure to strong or unpleasant odours, and working in bent or awkward positions sometimes in confined spaces.
