The Mechanical Design Engineer provides Mechanical Plumbing / HVAC and Mechanical Piping Design. Required engineering capabilities include the ability to develop and implement engineering and design concepts for HVAC, plant and clean/process utilities, compressed gases, plumbing, and fire protection systems. The Mechanical Engineer shall also have a thorough understanding of the development of design documents and deliverables through the conceptual, preliminary, detailed, and construction phases of a project (P&IDs, distribution plans, specifications, etc.). This role will be responsible for coordinating with internal and external design and engineering disciplines architects and engineers, as well as the client, construction managers, vendors, and subcontractors. Project assignments may include, although not limited to, water / wastewater, organics processing, institutional, industrial (ICI) and transit facilities.

Essential Job Results:

  • Develop conceptual design at the early stages of the project and develop the concept to high quality detailed design, co-ordinate with all disciplines
  • Design HVAC, Controls, Plumbing, Piping and Fire Protection systems; central utility plant systems and overall equipment layouts
  • Develop Mechanical / Utility equipment and construction specifications; airflow diagrams, classification, as well as ductwork and piping plans
  • Develop building management system (BMS) control philosophy, details, Sequence of Operations, and plans with I&C engineers; utility consumption summaries for plant and clean/process utilities
  • Develop P&ID’s, equipment plans, plant / process utility distribution plans, and system details
  • Perform construction assistance in the form of submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field visits to verify construction of Mechanical / Utilities scope is executed per the intent of the design, and assisting in start-up of systems when required
  • Write/ edit mechanical specifications
  • Perform HVAC calculations and analysis using standard industry programs (i.e. Carrier HAP)
  • Perform calculations, conduct design drawing reviews, and field investigations
  • Marketing services to client and maintaining client relationships and contributing to discipline related content for proposals

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10 plus years of experience required, much of this preferably in a design firm setting
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario and or Other Provinces Required
  • Experience using AutoCAD and Revit is preferred
  • Experience in water / wastewater / organics processing or industrial process projects preferred
  • Experience with Industry standards required
  • Experience in energy efficient design and current sustainable design approaches preferred
  • Understanding of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) required
  • Ability to lead a project and design effort from a mechanical / utilities perspective (from concept design through start-up) required
  • Proficient with P3 / design build model of project delivery
