Like a language interpreter, historical interpreters help translate unique and rich histories and cultures, breathing life into times-gone-by, and creating meaningful experiences for others. You’ll be dressed in period wardrobe, on-site at Fort Edmonton Park’s 1920s Street, showcasing your strengths, enlightening others, and championing truths about an important part of our history. We are looking for people who are passionate about the past and love to tell stories, teach, and share their heritage skills.

As a Muslim History Interpreter, you will:

  • Interpret Edmonton and Western Canada’s Muslim 1920s history to the visiting public, using a variety of methods such as conversation, re-enactment, role-playing, tours and hands-on activities/demonstrations of historic and Traditional skills in historical wardrobe
  • Participate in and lead large-scale interpretive programs such as historical talks, dramatic vignettes, and special event activities. Assist in researching and developing new stories and activities
  • Navigate the scope of the public’s questions and perspectives inclusively and respectfully, while also recognizing your right to the same
  • Assist with high-volume special events
  • Assist in the maintenance of artifacts and program supplies
  • Collect statistical information and document programs, as required
  • Lead programs for pre-registered groups, as required
  • Participate in outreach, media engagements, public events, and other functions, as required
  • Complete other duties, as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalent
  • Completion of the first year of a recognized diploma or degree program related to performing arts, history, education, recreation and leisure studies, or museum studies, will be considered an asset (other educational backgrounds and equivalencies will also be considered)
  • Some experience with program delivery for the general public, tour groups, children and other program users
  • Highly developed interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including the ability to manage potentially sensitive situations
  • Knowledge of Edmonton and Western Canada’s Muslim history and culture
  • Knowledge of and networks within our Muslim community is an asset
  • Some experience with related Muslim community networks and activities is an asset
  • Experience working in a museum, cultural centre, or historic site is an asset
  • Ability to converse in a second language is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR, and AED is required prior to commencing employment
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, as required

Successful candidates may be eligible for recall for the 2025 season

Up to 4 temporary, part-time positions for up to 5 months (May to September)

Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours per week, Monday – Sunday, weekends, evenings, and holidays, as required, from May to August. Weekends in September

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $18.067 – $22.361 (Hourly)
