Job description: This is a full-time, permanent position working 75 hours bi-weekly.

The Yukon Geological Survey acquires and disseminates geological and geohazard knowledge to support exploration; to inform resource and land management planning; to assist with infrastructure development; and to engage communities, schools and the public.

The position of Permafrost Scientist will investigate permafrost in Yukon, working within a multi-disciplinary team, and capturing information in the Yukon permafrost database. Work will include collecting ground temperature data, mapping the spatial extent of permafrost, monitoring of ground movement and analyzing permafrost cores with a focus on highway corridors and communities. These projects will involve the integration of geological, geophysical and climate-related data. Responsibilities include supervision of field personnel and management of logistics to ensure safe and efficient field operations. Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential.

Essential Qualifications

  • M.Sc. degree in Earth Sciences or related field with specialization in permafrost/surficial geology;
  • Experience planning and delivering field projects;
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary research teams;
  • Experience supervising field personnel;
  • Project management experience;
  • Experience using computer applications, including database, graphics software, and GIS.
