Job description: Your Opportunity:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family centered care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with the UAH and AHS policy and procedures. 3F4 is an 18+-bed unit providing care to Orthopedic and General Surgery patients received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment. The RN is expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program. The RN is expected to take on the responsibility of charge nurse as required. The RN must be able to demonstrate excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, organizational and patient care skills. Proficiency at medication administration calculations is required.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:

The ability to balance numerous demands and conflicting priorities is essential. The candidate must be able to work within a team environment and to effectively contribute to patient/client planning processes. Excellent communication skills, a compassionate and caring attitude and attention to detail are necessary. Candidates may be required to complete a medication calculation exam post interview. Failure to achieve a passing mark on the exam may impact decision to hire. Connect Care training, including on-line modules, classroom training and orientation required. The RN must be able to work in a fast paced, physically demanding environment, including standing, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling greater 25-50lbs. Must not have any current activity restrictions, such as pulling, pushing, reaching and bending. Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to communicate findings concisely, accurately, in both written and verbal form, deal with stressful situations; prioritize complex patient care needs and workload assignment, while dealing with frequent interruptions. Demonstrated initiative, reliability, flexibility and critical thinking. Maintain collaborative working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment. Strong patient teaching skills. Rotation subject to change.
