Position: Registered Practical Nurse
Department: Surgery Program – Surgical Day Care
Status: Temporary Part-time for approx. 6 months (must provide availability of up to 0.5 FTE)
Hours: Monday to Friday, Days & Evenings, Various rotating shifts; 0630-1430; 0700-1500; 08:00-1600; 09:00-1700; 8 hour shifts (subject to change based on operational requirements)

This is what you will be doing:
The Surgical Day Care team requires a Registered Practical Nurse with strong surgical experience to assist with the operational growth within the surgical program.
Functions as an active member of a multidisciplinary team in the provision of patient-focused care in the outpatient environment. The successful candidate will collaborate with other health care professionals in the planning and implementation of care for a wide variety of surgical cases.

- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
- Current BCLS Certification required at time of hire
- Recent experience with ophthalmology pre and post op preferred
- Experience with orthopedic patients, especially total joint replacements, strongly recommended
- Knowledge of pain management preferred
- Experience with Acute Pain Service
- Experience with regional anesthesia (peripheral nerve blocks and spinals)
- CVAD experience preferred
- Recent surgical experience in a day surgery environment required – pre and post-op care (including orthopedic same day total joints)
- Strong skills in IV insertion preferred
- Required skills include aseptic technique, wound care, ostomy care, CBI care, foley catheter insertion and management, IV care and management, including blood product administration and monitoring
- Experience in medication administration
- Organized and an ability to work in a team environment
- Self-directed
- Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills
- Caring, compassionate and patient and family-centred
- Ability to function in a fast-paced environment
- Sound knowledge of nursing process, theory, and responsibilities to the profession
- Sound problem-solving, conflict resolution and decision making skills

- Maximizes utilization of resources
- Evidence of continuing education/learning
- Aware of multicultural issues affecting health care needs
- Basic computer skills – Order Entry module of Meditech required
- Familiarity with Smarttrack (OR Manager) preferred
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position
- Satisfactory employment and attendance record required
