We are looking for a Research Associate (RA) to support our Aquatic and Crop Resource Development Research Centre. The RA would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The primary responsibility of the Research Associate (RA) is to support the goals of NRC and the Aquatic and Crop Resource Development Research Centre through research of international calibre and the development and application of advanced technologies. The RA works in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. Activities include the development of proposals for new research initiatives and project management. The RA provides input into the overall direction and research priorities for the program area within the context of the Research Centre business plan. The incumbent will be part of a research team that contributes to the design, synthesis and characterization of materials from renewable sources for application in agriculture. Specific technical duties include visualization and quantification of cellular uptake of nanomaterials and gene expression in microorganisms and plant cells, and providing expertise on the design and optimization of target detection. The position requires a highly motivated individual with significant expertise in confocal and fluorescence microscopy imaging of microorganisms and plant cells to support the development of technologies related to agricultural practices. The ideal candidate should be independent and organized, and able to work well in a diverse team of researchers and propose ways to address scientific challenges.

Education

As part of the RA Program you must have received your PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biology or related disciplines within the last five years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six months.

Experience

  • Significant experience in confocal and fluorescence microscopy imaging of microorganisms and/or plant cells, including labeling, staining and sample preparation protocols.
  • Significant experience in visualization of cellular uptake, target detection and gene expression analysis in microorganisms and/or plant cells.
  • Hands-on experience in laboratory setup, disassembly and reassembly of microscope, mounting of specimen, optimization of imaging parameters, image processing, hardware integration and software control.
  • Experience in the full spectrum of research activities including identification of research requirements, proposal writing, project management, data production and analysis, and reporting through written documentation, presentations and publishing.
  • Demonstrated record of scientific achievement through publications and presentations.
  • Experience performing experiments according to the established in-house protocols and safety procedures and ensuring good laboratory practice for data documentation.
  • Experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Hands-on expertise in confocal and fluorescence microscopy imaging of microorganisms and/or plant cells, including instrument setup, optimization techniques, and sample preparation, storage and disposal.
  • Practical knowledge of methods for studying gene expression and transfection using various cell and molecular biology laboratory techniques: Western blot, PCR, nucleic acid extraction.
  • Working knowledge of cell culture systems, including microorganisms and/or plants.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and conduct scientific studies that interface with multi-disciplinary areas.

Salary Range

From $56,374 to $159,364 per annum.

The Research Associate (RA) Program is unique to the NRC. It falls under the RO/RCO classification system which uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience.
