Job description: Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Prinicipal Investigator.

This position supports the research mandate of the PI and the Lupus Centre of Excellence, as well as internal and external stakeholders. The Centre’s work seeks to understand care pathways, provide access to novel therapies, and engage patient partners to inform policies that will create a healthier future for those affected by lupus.

The Research Associate will provide strategic leadership and develop procedures in alignment with the research goals of the Centre. They will collaborate with investigators and institutions to create a novel multi-center lupus registry and biorepository that will provide data essential for the development of precision treatments for lupus.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Research Management:
  • Site initiation of the Lupus Prospective Registry and BioRepository including gaining regulatory and operational approvals according to institutional and sponsor requirements (e.g. ethics/legal submissions, department approvals and cost agreements, sponsor regulatory documents and visits)
  • Management of data and biospecimen collection across 4 study cohorts, each with unique inclusion/exclusion criteria and visit schedules and ensuring compliance with protocol requirements
  • Preparation and management of monitoring visits (remote and/or onsite) as required by sponsors or regulatory agencies, with resolution of action items in a timely manner
  • Development and negotiation of research budgets and accurate reconciliation of expenses
  • Identification of areas of improvement, development of processes to improve research workflow and evaluation of outcomes
  • Supervision and Leadership:
  • Training and mentoring of junior staff members and development of collaborative relationships with research teams internal and external to the university
  • Leadership in the management of complex research projects ensuring adequate staffing resources are in place and acting as a site representative at stakeholder meetings
  • Communication and Relationships:
  • Development of communication management plans to ensure key stakeholders are informed of project progression
  • Collaboration with multi-site project staff and stakeholders to implement and disseminate project-applicable communications, presentations, publications, and research findings

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master of Science/Health Sciences with clinical research background, or Bachelor of Science/Health Sciences with significant health research experience
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a clinical research coordinator, research assistant, research associate or similar experience within an academic setting
  • Experience in engaging multiple parties in research across different settings (e.g. site research team, institute partners, sponsor representatives, and patients/participants)
  • Strong ability to solve complex problems based on analysis of multiple factors and meet multiple project deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to build consensus with internal and external and stakeholders and foster collaborative research
  • Research experience with University of Calgary; Cumming School of Medicine (CSM); CSM Legal and Finance; Calgary Centre for Clinical Research (CCCR); Oncore Clinical Trial Management System (CTSM): Conjoint Health Research and Ethics (CHREB/IRISS)
  • Work or research experience with Alberta Health Services, (AHS), particularly Resource and Facility Requests and Connect Care/Epic
  • Knowledge and demonstrated training of ethical human research standards, particularly Tri-Council (TCPS2.0), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Health Canada Division
  • Experience coordinating investigator-initiated and/or industry sponsored clinical trials
  • Experience and demonstrated training with Electronic Data Capture (EDC) systems including medidata RAVE and REDCap
