We are looking for an early-career Research Associate, Infrastructure Life-cycle Assessment (RA, Infrastructure LCA), to support our Construction Research Centre. The RA would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

As the RA, infrastructure LCA, in addition to supporting the goals of NRC and the Construction Research Centre through research of international calibre and the development and application of advanced technologies, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and technical experts working in world-class facilities.

For the following years, the work will focus on bridges and roadways, construction materials and products. Work in support of other LCI/LCA opportunities is possible. Other main duties include:

  • Development of proposals for new research initiatives, project management, and providing service to NRC clients.
  • Providing technical leadership that will guide and contribute to research and development activities that provide the technical underpinnings to a large multi-party initiative that aims to produce guidelines, benchmarks, industry collaborations, and calculation tools.
  • Interacting with diverse stakeholders, including representatives of government, industry and academia.
  • Providing input into the overall direction and research priorities or the program area within the context of the Construction Research Centre strategic plan.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

As part of the RA Program you must have received your PhD or Masters in Engineering with an emphasis on Civil Engineering infrastructure and life cycle assessment (LCA) within the last five years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six months.

Preference may be given to candidates with a multidisciplinary background in bridge/road structures and systems, infrastructure materials, and/or transit systems.

A PhD or Master’s degree in a related field received within the last 5 years or to be received within the next 6 months, combined with significant experience of applied research in life cycle assessment, may also be considered.

Experience

  • Significant experience in the application of LCA, including significant experience in using LCA software and LCA databases.
  • Significant experience in research activities related to the application of LCA to infrastructure systems.
  • Significant experience in research proposal development, project execution, documentation, and reporting.
  • Significant experience in written and oral communication to a broad range of audiences, such as industry, conferences, trade shows, community professionals, and review committees.
  • Experience in working with diverse stakeholders and/or clients;

The following may be considered assets:

  • Experience in Life Cycle Cost Analysis LCCA of civil engineering infrastructures.
  • Experience related to climate sustainability and resilience and of the built environment.
  • Experience working on guideline development, standard, or code, and leading and developing the documentation for consultative exercises.
  • Experience in infrastructure codes/standards, and the building design and construction process would be an asset.
  • Experience in programming (e.g. SQL, Python, R).

Technical Competencies

  • Solid ability to conduct life cycle assessment (LCA) including gathering data, creating models, interpreting results, and using LCA software.
  • Solid understanding of infrastructure systems and components.
  • Solid ability to develop and execute research and/or LCA projects.
  • Familiarity with LCI databases and solid ability to develop Life cycle inventory (LCI) datasets.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure design, construction and management would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) of building and infrastructure would be an asset.

Compensation

The intent of this hiring action is to staff through the Research Associate (RA) Program at the RCO-2/AsRO level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093 annually.

NOTE: Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $74,230.
