Job Description Summary
To manage all facets of daily operations, maintenance, and finances of a research laboratory with a proven track record of outstanding achievements and contributions in translational biomedical research. Emphasis for this position is lab management. The individual will work within a dynamic and vibrant lab comprised of a group of highly motivated team of researchers and a dedicated group of fellow technicians.

Organizational Status
This is a part-time (60% FTE) Lab Manager position that will assist the Principle Investigator in all parts of the Hayden Lab’s research program. The individual will interact closely with members of the research group (Research Associate, Postdoctoral Fellows and graduate students), fellow technicians and administrators in the Hayden Lab. The lab management position is fundamental to the ongoing success of the lab.

Work Performed

  • Identifies and implements strategies and procedures to ensure the safe operation of research laboratories. Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the lab
  • Oversees maintenance of all equipment in the laboratory, which includes maintaining contracts with equipment manufacturers, and coordinating repairs with vendors and suppliers
  • Orders laboratory supplies and equipment, including coordination of bid and tendering process with Finance Procurement for larger equipment
  • Maintains complete and accurate financial records related to ordering of materials and supplies for all research grants and prepares financial progress reports for funding agencies as needed
  • Management of a multi line transgenic animal colony including breeding set up, ordering, cryopreservation, budgeting, and shipping
  • Developing and renewing animal and bio-safety protocols through the UBC RiSe system
  • Provides assistance in maintaining legal documents for the lab; material transfer agreements, and non-disclosure agreements
  • Developing operating procedures and making recommendations on workflow improvements
  • Troubleshooting equipment including: cryostat, centrifuges, shakers, thermocyclers, pulse field, electrophoresis equipment, biosafety cabinets, dissecting microscope and computer set up
  • Demonstrates equipment, techniques and procedures to lab personnel
  • Facilitates in the maintenance of the facility; annual inspections, annual safety certifications and maintenance
  • Managing safe handling and proper disposal of chemicals, biohazardous, and infectious materials in accordance with WCB and WHIMIS
  • Participating in the local safety committee
  • Managing laboratory safety (including training and certification) and chemical compliance; involvement in some HR processes including identifying, interviewing & providing recommendations of suitable candidates
  • Working closely with the lab’s Finance Manager, the lab manager will ensure that daily financial operations of the laboratory including: managing credit card purchases made by the lab
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent will make important decisions affecting the functioning of the lab. Incompetence or incorrect decisions could jeopardize research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety, and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel.

Supervision Received
The general scope and direction of the research is under the jurisdiction of the principal investigator. This position works independently, reporting bi-weekly to Dr. Michael Hayden during individual
meetings and at lab meetings. This position will also receive occasional direction and guidance from the HR Manager.

Supervision Given
This position does involve occasional training and orientation of trainees, research assistants and volunteers

Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute. University degree in Science or related discipline. Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.Ability to anticipate problems and issues and plan ahead. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to effectively use [job-specific software] at an intermediate level. (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel). Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to perform research-related procedures (e.g., prepare solutions) (e.g., dissecting) (e.g., prepare specimens).
Extensive knowledge of mouse anatomy and surgical techniques is an asset.
Extensive knowledge of Molecular Biology and genetics is an asset.
Knowledge of general laboratory techniques.
